* 1540 – Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto's forces destroy the fortified town of Mabila in present-day Alabama, killing Tuskaloosa.

* February – Soldiers at Fort Louis de la Mobile celebrate Mardi Gras in Mobile, starting the tradition for Mobile, Alabama.

* February – French settlers at Fort Louis de la Mobile celebrate Mardi Gras in Mobile ( Alabama ) by parading a large papier-mache ox head on a cart ( the first Mardi Gras parade in America ).

Mardi Gras arrived in North America as a French Catholic tradition with the Le Moyne brothers, Pierre Le Moyne d ' Iberville and Jean-Baptiste Le Moyne de Bienville, in the late 17th century, when King Louis XIV sent the pair to defend France's claim on the territory of Louisiane, which included what are now the U. S. states of Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana.

* Louis Juchereau de St. Denis establishes Fort St. Jean Baptiste at the site of present day Natchitoches, Louisiana ( the first permanent European settlement in the Louisiana Territory, after Biloxi ( 1699 ) and Mobile, Alabama ( 1702 ) were separated ).

* February – In America, Mardi Gras is celebrated one more time with Masque de la Mobile in the capital of French Louisianne, Mobile ( Alabama ), before Mobile is moved 27 miles ( 43 km ) down the Mobile River to Mobile Bay in 1711.

* January 12 – In America, ships from Fort Maurepas arrive at Twenty-Seven Mile Bluff to build Fort Louis de la Mobile ( future Mobile, Alabama ) to become the capital of French Louisiana.

* February – In America, Mardi Gras is celebrated with the Masque de la Mobile in the capital of French Louisianne, Mobile ( Alabama ).

From 1540 – 1543, de Soto explored through present-day Florida and Georgia, and then down into the Alabama and Mississippi area.

The Upper Towns, located on the Coosa, Tallapoosa and Alabama rivers, were Tuckabatchee, Abhika, Coosa ( Kusa ; the dominant people of East Tennessee and North Georgia during the Spanish explorations ), Itawa ( original inhabitants of the Etowah Indian Mounds ), Hothliwahi ( Ullibahali ), Hilibi, Eufaula, Wakokai, Atasi, Alibamu, Coushatta ( Koasati ; they had absorbed the Kaski / Casqui and the Tali ), and Tuskegee (" Napochi " in the de Luna chronicles ).

The first Europeans to travel through central Alabama were Hernando de Soto and his expedition, who went through Ikanatchati and camped for one week in Towassa in 1540.
