The story of Turandot was taken from a Persian collection of stories called The Book of One Thousand and One Days ( 1722 French translation Les Mille et un jours by François Pétis de la Croix — not to be confused with its sister work The Book of One Thousand and One Nights ), where the character of " Turandokht " as a cold princess was found.

For example, a similar tale is recorded in Arabian Nights where Harun al-Rashid plays the same trick on a man he finds sleeping in an alley, and in De Rebus Burgundicis by the Dutch historian Pontus de Heuiter, where the trick is performed by Philip the Good, i. e. Philip III, Duke of Burgundy.

The recording of Manuel de Falla's " Nights in the Gardens of Spain " with pianist Arthur Rubinstein has remained available.

There exists one additional contribution to the series ; " Return to Xanadu " by Lawrence Watt-Evans, which revisits the world of Kubla Khan and transfers a minor character appearing therein to that of The Arabian Nights by the agency of an unnamed magician who appears to be intended to represent L. Sprague de Camp himself.
