In 1986 Nespolo had the possibility of designing the stage sets for Ferruccio Busoni ’ s opera Turandot at Connecticut Grand Opera, Stamford, the first of several theatre works he made in the following years, such as the sets and costumes for Paisiello's Don Chisciotte at the Teatro dell ' Opera di Roma in 1990 and for Donizetti's L ' elisir d ' amore, a production for the Rome Opera, the Paris Opera and the Opéra de Lausanne, Liège and Metz in 1995.

Two closely related instruments include the baryton and the viola d ' amore, although the latter is played under the chin, viola-fashion.

In 1884, he composed Ballata for tenor and piano ; M ' ama non m ' ama, scherzo for soprano and piano ; Messagio d ' amore, and Alla luna.

His best-known works are the operas L ' elisir d ' amore ( 1832 ), Lucia di Lammermoor ( 1835 ), and Don Pasquale ( 1843 ), all in Italian, and the French operas La favorite and La fille du régiment ( both from 1840 ).

Shortly after L ' elisir d ' amore, Donizetti composed Lucia di Lammermoor, based on the Sir Walter Scott novel The Bride of Lammermoor.

It was recognized at the time as, and is still considered, Donizetti's comic masterpiece, and remains one of the most popular of his 66 operas, as well as one of the three most popular Italian comic operas, the other two being Rossini's The Barber of Seville and Donizetti's own L ' elisir d ' amore.

In 1946, he made his film debut in Preludio d ' amore, the year after he appeared in five films.
