As a last-ditch effort to increase interest in the failing operating system, Be Inc. released a stripped-down, but free, copy of BeOS R5 known as BeOS Personal Edition ( BeOS PE ).

BeOS R5 is considered the last official version, but BeOS R5. 1 " Dano ", which was under development before Be's sale to Palm and included the BeOS Networking Environment ( BONE ) networking stack, was leaked to the public shortly after the company's demise.

In 1998, the system was ported to the Intel x86 architecture, and PowerPC support was reduced, finally being dropped after BeOS R5.

The PowerPC version of BeOS R5 will not be supported.

These include additional filesystem drivers and media codec add-ons, although the only affected add-ons for BeOS R5 not easily re-implemented are Indeo 5 media decoders for which no specification exists.

Audio drivers using API versions prior to BeOS R5 are as-yet unsupported, and unlikely to be so ; however, R5-era drivers work.

R5 was the 4th major release of BeOS for a public audience, and the 6th since it left developer-only stages.

R5 was the first release of BeOS for x86 to have a freely downloadable version which could be fully installed on a user's hard drive ; previous versions had a free Live CD download, which could not be installed.

R5 was also to be the last version to support the PowerPC architecture which BeOS had originated on, including the company's own BeBox hardware.

A widely leaked version of BeOS that had been seeded to developers, codenamed Dano, carried many new features, and a build ID indicating it was BeOS R5. 1. 0.

A new commercial venture, ZETA, is an operating system that appears to be based on the Dano codebase, and has been accepted by some BeOS users as a successor to R5.
