Stone Temple Pilots ( often abbreviated to STP ) is an American rock band from San Diego, California that consists of Scott Weiland ( lead vocals ), brothers Robert DeLeo ( bass guitar, vocals ) and Dean DeLeo ( guitar ), and Eric Kretz ( drums, percussion ).

It was started by Ray Scott, the " father " of competitive bass fishing.

Brothers Ron ( guitar ) and Scott Asheton ( drums ) and their friend Dave Alexander ( bass guitar ) rounded out the rest of the band, with Osterberg taking vocal duties.

Pop and the Ashetons first reunited that year, appearing on four songs on the Skull Ring album with Pop on vocals, Scott Asheton on drums, and Ron Asheton on both guitar and bass.

After changing the band's name to Saratoga, they started playing Livgren's original material with Scott Kessler playing bass and Zeke Lowe on drums.

Usually the band performs as follows: Murphy is on lead vocals and plays bass, Pentland is also on lead vocals and plays lead guitar, Ferguson plays rhythm guitar, and Scott plays drums.

The most notable exception is when Scott picks up the guitar to play his songs ; Ferguson and Murphy switch to bass and drums, respectively.

This was due partly to a lineup change: founding member and frequent songwriter James Nunn had left the group the previous year, leaving guitarists Scott Sheldon and Eric Davis to fill in on bass, along with studio bassist Hedge.
