Black Sabbath's 1970 debut album created a dark sound different from other bands at the time and has been called the first ever " Goth-rock " record.

Black Sabbath's " Behind the Wall of Sleep " appeared on their 1970 debut album and is based on Lovecraft's short story " Beyond the Wall of Sleep ".

Some of speed metal's earlier influences include Black Sabbath's " Children of the Grave ", Deep Purple's " Fireball " and Queen's " Stone Cold Crazy " ( which was eventually covered by the thrash metal band Metallica ), from their 1974 album Sheer Heart Attack, and Deep Purple's song " Highway Star ", from their album Machine Head.

Black Sabbath's music is itself stylistically rooted in blues, but with the deliberately doomy and loud guitar playing of Tony Iommi ( who often used the tritone in his playing and composition ), and the then-uncommon dark and pessimistic lyrics and atmosphere, they set the standards of early heavy metal and inspired various doom metal bands to come.

However, the magazine's initially harsh opinion of the album seems to have softened over time, as they would later place the album at number 298 on their 500 Greatest Albums of All Time list, compiled in 2003 while also describing Black Sabbath as " the greatest sludge-metal band of them all ..." The magazine described the album as " the definitive studio relic of Sabbath's golden-hellfire era ( 1970-74 )..."

Jourgensen and Barker also formed Lard with Dead Kennedys lead singer Jello Biafra, Acid Horse with Cabaret Voltaire, 1000 Homo DJs ( which featured Nine Inch Nails ' Trent Reznor doing vocals on a cover of Black Sabbath's Supernaut ), PTP with Chris Connelly and Pailhead with Ian MacKaye of Minor Threat and Fugazi.

Thrash metal band Anthrax, at the end of their cover of Black Sabbath's " Sabbath Bloody Sabbath " from their 1987 EP I'm the Man, launch into an abbreviated version of Sabbath's " Sweet Leaf " which fades to silence after several seconds, an homage to Metallica's Iron Maiden tribute contained on The $ 5. 98 EP.

After In Rock, he went on to buy Black Sabbath's debut, Jethro Tull's Aqualung and Tarkus by Emerson, Lake & Palmer.

The record was originally to be done with drummer Cozy Powell, then Black Sabbath's current drummer, but he was immobilized by a broken pelvic bone he had sustained in a horse riding accident.

They subsequently recruited Vinny Appice, who had served as Black Sabbath's drummer during most of Dio's previous tenure with the band, from 1980 – 1982.

Prior to his death, he was collaborating on a project with former Black Sabbath bandmates Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and Vinny Appice, under the moniker Heaven & Hell, whose only studio album, The Devil You Know, was released on April 28, 2009.

In October 2006, it was confirmed that Dio would be joining Black Sabbath members Tony Iommi, Geezer Butler, and former Black Sabbath drummer Vinny Appice to tour under the moniker Heaven & Hell, the title of the first Dio era Black Sabbath album.

They chose the name Heaven & Hell as Tony Iommi and Geezer Butler were still in Black Sabbath with Ozzy Osbourne and felt it was best to use a different moniker for the Dio version of the band.

On the flight from San Francisco to London in November 1977, and for the next three weeks, Walker wrote lyrics to the new music which the remaining members of Black Sabbath ( guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Terry ' Geezer ' Butler and drummer Bill Ward ) wrote for their next album.

Once the album's recording was complete, Daisley was once again out, replaced by Osbourne's former Black Sabbath bandmate Geezer Butler.

Before the formation of Black Sabbath, Bill Ward and guitarist Tony Iommi played in a band called Mythology, and joined vocalist Ozzy Osbourne and bassist Geezer Butler, who had played in a band together called " Rare Breed ".

GZR is a band led by Black Sabbath bassist / lyricist Geezer Butler.

After the handful of live gigs in 1997, the band was mostly put on ice, as Geezer was busy with various things Black Sabbath related for quite a while.

Appice rejoined his Black Sabbath bandmates Ronnie James Dio, Geezer Butler, and Tony Iommi in 2006 as Heaven & Hell, touring and releasing one studio album, The Devil You Know, before Dio's death in 2010.

Issue # 1 was 16 pages on grey stock paper, and featured interviews with Pantera, Entombed, Gwar, Cannibal Corpse and Geezer Butler of Black Sabbath.
