In the 19th century, with the exception of John Stainer's The Crucifixion ( 1887 ), Passion settings were less popular, but in the 20th century, they have again come into fashion.

The versions compared below are taken from the New English Hymnal ( 1986 ) ( which is the version used in Henry Ramsden Bramley and John Stainer's, Carols, New and Old ), Ralph Dunstan's gallery version in the Cornish Songbook ( 1929 ) and Rev.

Bede explains how each of the four Evangelists was represented by their own symbol: Matthew was the man, representing the human Christ, Mark was the lion, symbolizing the triumphant Christ of the Resurrection, Luke was the calf, symbolizing the sacrificial victim of the Crucifixion, and John was the eagle, symbolizing Christ ’ s second coming ( The British Library Board ).

To the right, the Conception, Crucifixion and Resurrection symbolize redemption, and this is duly impressed on Adam by John the Baptist.

In 1998, John Windsor in The Independent said that the work of the YBAs seemed tame compared with that of the " shock art " of the 1970s, including " kinky outrages " at the Nicholas Treadwell Gallery, amongst which were a " hanging, anatomically detailed leather straitjacket, complete with genitals ", titled Pink Crucifixion, by Mandy Havers.

John Calvin presented the same Christological view of " The Lamb as the agent of God " by arguing that in his trial before Pilate and while at Herod's Court Jesus could have argued for his innocence, but instead remained mostly quiet and submitted to Crucifixion in obedience to the Father, for he knew his role as the Lamb of God.

Sir John Stainer ( 6 June 1840 – 31 March 1901 ) was an English composer and organist whose music, though not generally much performed today ( with the exception of The Crucifixion, still heard at Passiontide in many Protestant churches of the former British Empire ), was very popular during his lifetime.

Some critics would later complain that the large cast distracted from the solemnity, notably in the appearance of John Wayne as the Roman centurion who comments on the Crucifixion by stating: “ Truly this man was the son of God .”

betrayal of Jesus by Judas ; Peter denying Christ and repenting of it ; the judgment of Jesus by Pilate (“ Ecce Homo ”); the Johannine Passion Narrative ( John 18-19 ; including the Agony in the Garden ); the Carrying of the Cross ; the Crucifixion of Christ ( Laurence Olivier's Nicodemus recites the “ Suffering Servant ” passage 53: 3-5 as he looks helplessly on the crucified Messiah ); the discovery of the empty tomb ; and an appearance of the Risen Christ to his Disciples.

It was dipped in vinegar ( or in some translations sour wine ) and offered to Christ to drink during the Crucifixion, according to Matthew 27: 48 ; Mark 15: 36 ; and John 19: 29.

The Apostolic Age of the history of Christianity is traditionally the period of the Twelve Apostles, dating from the Crucifixion of Jesus ( c. 30-33 ) and the Great Commission in Jerusalem until the death of John the Apostle ( c. 115 ) in Anatolia.

Just as the Gospel of John proclaims the universal relevance of the Incarnation of Jesus as Logos, the Pauline view emphasizes the cosmic view that his birth, Crucifixion and Resurrection brought forth a new man and a new world.

Only two of the fully decorated pages survive: a Crucifixion ( the oldest in English art ) and the initial to John, and both of these are in poor condition.

The main altar --" The Silver Altar "-- is a wooden triptych with an ebony veneer with sculptured reliefs in silver in ascending order of the Last Supper on the predella ; a large depiction of the Crucifixion of Christ between silver statues of Moses and John the Baptist in niches with small silver columns on either side ; of the Burial of Christ ( between silver statues of the evangelists Matthew and Mark ; of Christ's Harrowing of Hell ( between statues of the evangelists John and Luke ; and on the pediment at top of the triptych, a silver statue of the Risen Christ between two reclining soldiers.

However this masterpiece of Christian symbolism had two serious weak points: historical inaccuracy surrounding the date of Resurrection as determined by its Easter computus, and its contradiction to the chronology of the Gospel of St John regarding the date of the Crucifixion on Friday after the Passover.

According to the legend: " after the Crucifixion, when Our Lady moved to the home of St. John, she took with her a few personal belongings -- among which was a table built by the Redeemer in the workshop of St. Joseph.

Below this is the Healing of the man born blind from John 9: 1, inscribed: " Et praeteriens vidit hominem caecum a natibitate et sanavit eum ab infirmitate ," the Annunciation (" Et ingressus angelus ad eam dixit ave gratia plena dominus tecum benedicta tu in mulieribus "-Luke 1: 28 ) and the Crucifixion, which on stylistic grounds is considered to have been added at a considerably later period.

The central panel has a Crucifixion with the Virgin Mary and Saint John the Evangelist standing beside the cross, with the sun and the moon above the cross.
