Styx began its series of concept albums in 1977 with The Grand Illusion-focused on self-constructed and societal walls ( similar to The Wall by Pink Floyd )-then followed it with Pieces of Eight in 1978.

Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys ( whose much anticipated Smile project would not emerge until 2004 ), Brian Jones of the Rolling Stones, Peter Green of Fleetwood Mac and Syd Barrett of Pink Floyd were early " acid casualties ", helping to shift the focus of the respective bands of which they had been leading figures.

Many of the British musicians and bands that had embraced psychedelia went on to create progressive rock in the 1970s, including Pink Floyd, Soft Machine and members of Yes.

At the 82nd Academy Awards Sheedy, Hall, Ringwald and Nelson all appeared in a tribute to John Hughes, along with other actors who had worked with Hughes, including Jon Cryer from Pretty in Pink, Matthew Broderick from Ferris Bueller's Day Off, and Macaulay Culkin from Home Alone.

A friend, Gary Chambers, was recruited to join on drums and bass guitarist John Shuttleworth was poached from the Pink Armadillos.

Following the 1966 tour, the group moved with Dylan to Saugerties, New York, where they made the informal 1967 recordings that became The Basement Tapes, which forged the basis for their 1968 debut album Music from Big Pink.

Their first album, Music from Big Pink ( 1968 ) was widely acclaimed.

After the success of Music from Big Pink, the band went on tour, including a performance at the Woodstock Festival ( which was not included in the famed Woodstock film due to legal complications ) and an appearance with Dylan at the UK Isle of Wight Festival ( several songs from which were subsequently included on Dylan's Self Portrait album ).

The album Music from Big Pink, in particular, is credited with contributing to Clapton's decision to leave the super group Cream.

The group exhibited a steady development from an early raucous punk style ( 1977's Pink Flag ) to a more complex, structured sound involving increased use of guitar effects and synthesizers ( 1978's Chairs Missing and 1979's 154 ).
