It is also traversed by Hagerman Pass to the north, connecting the Arkansas Headwaters near Leadville with the upper valley of the Fryingpan River.

It traverses the Sawatch Range west of Leadville, connecting the headwaters of the Arkansas River on the east with the upper valley of the Fryingpan River above Basalt, in the basin of the Colorado River.

The Valley is defined by the valley of the Roaring Fork River and its tributaries, including the Crystal and Fryingpan River.

The Roaring Fork Valley is part of the larger Roaring Fork Watershed, which includes the Fryingpan and Crystal River valleys.

The main Oregon and California Trail went almost due north from Fort Bridger to the Little Muddy Creek where it passed over the Bear River Mountains to the Bear River valley, which it followed northwest into the Thomas Fork area, where the trail crossed over the present day Wyoming line into Idaho.

Clark County is surrounded on two sides by the Columbia River and on the north by the North Fork of the Lewis River.
