There have been three well known battles in the town: The Battle of Inverurie ( 1308 ), the Battle of Harlaw ( 24 July 1411 ) between Donald of Islay, Lord of the Isles ( MacDonald ) and an army commanded by Alexander Stewart, Earl of Mar ; and the Battle of Inverurie ( 1745 ) during the Jacobite Rebellion of that year.

William, the 4th Earl of Ross, was present with his clan at the Battle of Bannockburn ( 1314 ), and almost a century later ( 1412 ) the castle of Dingwall, the chief seat on the mainland of Donald, Lord of the Isles, was captured after the disastrous fight at Harlaw in Aberdeenshire, which Donald had provoked when his claim to the earldom was rejected.

Site of the Battle of Harlaw, where in 1411 Domhnall of Islay, Lord of the Isles | Donald McDonald, 2nd Lord of the Isles fought the Stewarts to a bloody standstill.
At the Battle of Harlaw ( known as " Red Harlaw " on account of its savagery ) on 24 July 1411, losses were heavy on both sides, though McDonald's eventual withdrawal allowed the Stewarts to claim a strategic victory.

Harlaw Academy is a six year comprehensive secondary school situated 200 yards from the junction of Union Street and Holburn Street in the centre of Aberdeen, Scotland.

Sc., became Headmaster and early in the new session plans began to be made for Ruthrieston Secondary School to become part of Harlaw Academy the following session, ceasing to be a separate entity on the retiral of Mr. Garden on 24 November 1972.
Since the incorporation of Ruthrieston Secondary School, Harlaw Academy was now a co-educational, comprehensive secondary school and still is to this day.
In 2010, Harlaw Academy was threatened with closure, as part of the council's cutbacks of over £ 50m worth of debt.
