Part of southeastern ( Karelia ) and Salla region Finland was annexed by the Soviet Union after the Winter War.

The Soviet forces did not accomplish their objective of the total conquest of Finland but conquered sufficient territory along Lake Ladoga, Petsamo and Salla.

After the Second World War, Petsamo municipality and part of Salla municipality were ceded to the Soviet Union.

Finland also had to cede a part of the Salla area, the Finnish part of the Kalastajansaarento ( Rybachi ) peninsula in the Barents Sea, and in the Gulf of Finland the islands of Suursaari, Tytärsaari, Lavansaari ( now Moshchny Island о. Мощный ), Peninsaari ( now Maly Island, о. Малый ) and Seiskari.

Among its most notable events are Bishop Felix's adoptionist revolt, the coup of Bishop Esclua and the overthrowing of the bishop by members of aristocratic families ( namely Salla i Ermengol del Conflent, Eribau i Folcs dels Cardona, Guillem Guifré de Cerdanya and Ot de Pallars ) between the years 981 and 1122.

As part of Operation Arctic Fox the division attacked with the SS Division Nord and German 169th Infantry Division against Salla with the goal of reaching Kandalaksha on the White Sea coast.

They were joined in the Spring of 1941, by the SS 6th and 7th Regiments and moved into positions at Salla in northern Finland.

Involved in the battle at Salla, against strong Soviet forces they suffered 300 killed and 400 wounded in the first two days of the invasion.

The battle at Salla was a disaster: the thick forests and heavy smoke from forest fires disoriented the troops, and the units completely fell apart.

A short vocabulary was written by the Finnish priest Jacob Fellman in 1829 after he visited the villages of Salla ( Kuolajärvi until 1936 ) and Sompio.

Salla ( Kuolajärvi until 1936 ) is a municipality of Finland, located in Lapland.

Salla is in the Eastern Lapland and as a border area has been affected the Second World War.

Soviet troops invaded Finland at Salla during the Winter War but were stopped by the Finnish Army ( see Battle of Salla ).

The ceded part is sometimes called " Old Salla " or Vanha Salla.
