In 1948, the Rhee government repressed military uprisings in Jeju, Suncheon and Yeosu.

By June 1598, The Japanese forces fought with desperation, turning back several Chinese offensives in Suncheon and Sacheon as the Ming army prepared for a final assault.

The railway junction is located at the point where Jeolla, Janghang Line and Gunsan Lines meet the Honam Line, and is served by frequent train service to / from Seoul, Daejeon, Gwangju, Mokpo, Jeonju, Suncheon, and Yeosu.

Apart from Jeonju and Naju, other cities of note include Iksan ( formerly Iri ), Gunsan, Mokpo, Namwon, Suncheon, and Yeosu.

The freeway connects Nonsan on the Cheonan-Nonsan Expressway and Honam Expressway Branch Line to Gwangju and Suncheon on the Namhae Expressway.

Being midway along southern coast of South Korea, it is flanked by Namhae County in South Gyeongsang Province to the east with natural waterway, and the Bay of Suncheon to the west and northwest, the city of Suncheon sprawling along its banks.

As of October 14, 2007 plans are being set up and a referendum is being planned for a merging of the cities of Yeosu, Suncheon and Gwangyang into a new metropolitan city, taking advantage of the Gwangyang Bay Free Economic Zone, Yeosu's Expo 2012 bid and port facilities, Suncheon's educational institutes and Gwangyang's POSCO plant.
