Counter to popular belief, the main risk of exposure to DU is chemical poisoning by uranium oxide rather than radioactivity ( uranium being only a weak alpha emitter ).

It is expected that some continual improvement of experimental sensitivity will allow discovery of very mild radioactivity ( instability ) of some isotopes that are considered to be stable today.

This is commonly done by measurement of the alpha radioactivity ( the uranium and thorium content ) and the potassium content ( K-40 is a beta and gamma emitter ) of the sample material.
