Flight Unlimited was the first of three self-published titles released by Looking Glass Technologies.
However, the next two products, Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri ( 1996 ) and British Open Championship Golf ( 1997 ), were commercial failures.
As a result, the company ceased self-publishing and was left in dire financial circumstances.
Doug Church later explained that Looking Glass " was trying to establish itself as a publisher at a time when that was very, very hard to do.
All the other mid-sized publishers were mostly going out of business or getting bought ".
He believed that the company had been " overreaching itself " with the venture, and that it was " being a little overambitious and a little cocky ".
