Consuelo Balsan ( formerly, Consuelo, Duchess of Marlborough ; born Consuelo Vanderbilt ) ( 2 March 1877 – 6 December 1964 ), was a member of the prominent American Vanderbilt family.

He also temporarily pursued the Duchess of Marlborough ( the American-born Consuelo Vanderbilt ), who was separated, and later divorced, from the Duke of Marlborough.

Her Spanish name was in honor of her godmother, Maria Consuelo Iznaga Clement ( 1858 – 1909 ), a half-Cuban, half-American socialite who created a social stir a year earlier when she married the fortune-hunting George Montagu, Viscount Mandeville, a union of Old World and New World that caused the groom's father, the 7th Duke of Manchester, to openly wonder if his son and heir had married a " Red Indian.

Probably the social event there was the 1895 wedding reception of Vanderbilt's daughter, Consuelo, to the duke of Marlborough.

The 9th Duke was succeeded by his and Consuelo Vanderbilt's eldest son: John, 10th Duke of Marlborough ( 1897 – 1972 ) who after eleven years as a widower, remarried at the age of 74, to ( Frances ) Laura Charteris, formerly the wife of the 2nd Viscount Long and the 3rd Earl of Dudley, and granddaughter of the 11th Earl of Wemyss.

Her Spiridion, which was dedicated to him, Sept cordes de la lyre, Consuelo, and La Comtesse de Rudolstadt, were written under the Humanitarian inspiration.
