A notable solo album, Songs ( Intakt 026: 1993 ), features politically oriented originals, such as " Knock on the Door " and " Hello Ceausescu ", and covers, such as Nick Drake's " Thoughts of Mary Jane ", and Floyd Tillman's " This Cold War With You ".

The group itself has since gone on to enjoy great popularity and recognition, including songs such as " Homeless ", " Hello My Baby " and also recordings of Bob Dylan's " Knockin ' on Heaven's Door ", the Rugby World Cup theme " The World in Union ", and " Mbube " ( a song composed in 1939 by Zulu worker Solomon Linda-The song, with additional lyrics, is also known as " The Lion Sleeps Tonight ") — this last having given its name, meaning lion, to the genre.

On June 11, 1963, George Wallace, the governor of Alabama, stood in front of the Foster Auditorium entrance at The University of Alabama in what became known as the Stand in the Schoolhouse Door in an attempt to stop desegregation of that institution by the enrollment of two African-American students, Vivian Malone and James Hood ; when confronted by US Deputy Attorney General Nicholas Katzenbach and federal marshals sent in by Attorney General Robert F. Kennedy, Wallace stepped aside.

Unusually for episodic radio drama, several episodes were sequels of earlier broadcasts, or at least recycled the same ideas: A character and setting from the very first episode " Nothing Behind the Door " ( 8 June 1947 ) are referenced in one of the last episodes, " The Other Side of the Stars "; in " The Man Who Knew Everything " ( 6 March 1949 ) the titular character seems to die at the episode's end, only to return in " The Venetian Blind Man " ( 3 April 1949 ).
