In his article Observations on the marital metaphor of YHWH and Israel in its ancient Israelite context: general considerations and particular images in Hosea 1. 2, Ben Zvi describes the role of the Gomer in the marriage metaphor as one of the “ central attributes of the ideological image of a human marriage that was shared by the male authorship and the primary and intended male readership as building blocks for their imagining of the relationship .”

Gilead, e. g. a district little named in the prophets, is twice mentioned in Hosea ( Hosea 6: 8, 12: 11 ) and in such a manner as to suggest that he knew it by personal observation ; and Mizpah ( mentioned in Hosea 5: 1 ) is no doubt the Mizpah in Gilead

Then we find Tabor ( Hosea 5: 1 ), Shechem ( Hosea 6: 9 the Revised Version ( British and American )), Gilgal and Bethel ( Hosea 4: 15, 9: 15, 10: 5, 10: 8, 10: 15, 12: 11 ).

) The name of Hosea's son, Lo-ammi, which translates as " not my people ," is chosen by the Lord as a sign of the Lord's displeasure with the people of Israel for following other gods ( see Hosea 1: 8-9 ).

Other preachers, like Charles Spurgeon, saw Hosea as a striking presentation of the mercy of God in his sermon on Hosea 1: 7 titled The LORD's Own Salvation.

“ But I will have mercy upon the house of Judah, and will save them by the Lord their God, and will not save them by bow, nor by sword, nor by battle, by horses, nor by horsemen .”- Hosea 1: 7 in his sermon NO.

His name occurs in the Old Testament only in 2 Kings 13: 13 ; 14: 16, 23, 27, 28, 29 ; 15: 1, 8 ; 1 Chronicles 5: 17 ; Hosea 1: 1 ; and Amos 1: 1 ; 7: 9, 10, 11.

First come those prophets dated to the early Assyrian period: Hosea, Amos, Obadiah, Jonah, and Micah ; Joel is undated, but it was possibly placed before Amos because parts of a verse near the end of Joel ( 3. 16 in Hebrew ) and one near the beginning of Amos ( 1. 2 ) are identical.

The term Latter Rain stems from Bible passages such as Jeremiah 3: 3, 5: 23 – 25, Joel 2: 23, Hosea 6: 3, Zechariah 10: 1, and James 5: 7.

Several passages from the Old Testament have been proposed as likely candidates for this source such as Psalm 16, Hosea 6: 2, and Jonah 1: 17.

In Hosea 2, the woman in the marriage metaphor is Hosea ’ s wife Gomer.

This is reflected throughout the beginning of Hosea 2.

“ I will strip her naked and expose her as in the day she was born ” ( Hosea 2: 3 ).

“ Upon her children I will have no pity, because they are children of whoredom ” ( Hosea 2: 4 ).

“ For she said, I will go after my lovers ...” ( Hosea 2: 5 ).

( In Hosea 2: 23 she is redeemed, shown mercy with the term Ruhamah.

In the Bible, nose-jewels are mentioned in Isaiah 3: 21, and referred to in Ezekiel 16: 12, Genesis 24: 47, Proverbs 11: 22, and Hosea 2: 13.

" Great is repentance: it brings healing into the world "; " it reaches to the throne of God " ( Hosea 14: 2, 5 ); " it brings redemption " ( Isaiah 59: 20 ); " it prolongs man's life " ( Ezekiel 18: 21 ; Talmud Yoma 86a ).

The name of Petach Tikva was chosen by its founders in 1878 from the prophecy of Hosea ( 2: 15 ), " And I will give her vineyards from thence, and the Valley of Achor for an opening of hope: and she shall sing there, as in the days of her youth, and as in the day when she came up out of the land of Egypt.

In the NIV translation, the omitting of the word ' him ' leads to speculation as to whether Lo-Ruhamah was the daughter of Hosea or one of Gomer's lovers.

Early American advocates of Universal Salvation such as Elhanan Winchester, Hosea Ballou and John Murray taught that all souls would achieve salvation, sometimes after a period resembling purgatory.

Christian Universalists such as Hosea Ballou argued that Jesus taught Universalist principles including universal reconciliation and the divine origin and destiny of all souls, and that these teachings were further developed by Saint Paul, Saint Peter, and Saint John the Apostle.

The movie chronicles the period when John Allen Muhammad ( played by Bobby Hosea ) and Lee Boyd Malvo ( played by Trent Cameron ) went on a serial shooting spree in October 2002 in Virginia, Washington, D. John Hosea Kerr III ( born 1936 ) was a Democratic member of the North Carolina General Assembly representing constituents in Greene, Lenoir and Wayne counties.

In A Message to Garcia and Thirteen Other Things ( 1901 ), Hubbard explained his Credo by writing " I believe John Ruskin, William Morris, Henry Thoreau, Walt Whitman and Leo Tolstoy to be Prophets of God, and they should rank in mental reach and spiritual insight with Elijah, Hosea, Ezekiel and Isaiah.

John Hosea Kerr ( 1873 – 1958 ), grand-nephew of John Kerr and relative of John Kerr, Jr., was a Democratic Party member of the U. S. House of Representatives representing North Carolina from 1923 to 1953.

Hosea Ballou has been called the " father of American Universalism ," along with John Murray ( minister ), who founded the first Universalist church in America in Gloucester, Massachusetts, in 1774.

During the Selma to Montgomery marches, Brothers Hosea Williams and John Lewis ( U. S. politician ) led a 54-mile protest march from Selma to the capital of Alabama: Montgomery.

However, it is probable that this was again a symbolic act, in which Hosea divorced Gomer for infidelity, and used the occasion to preach the message of God's rejection of the Northern Kingdom.

One of the early writing prophets, Hosea used his own experience as a symbolic representation of God and Israel: God the husband, Israel the wife.

The Book of Hosea has also been used in Qur ' anic exegesis by Abdullah Yusuf Ali, especially in reference to Qur ' anic verses which speak of the backsliding of Israel.

Cook showed that although " Ephraim " is sometimes used in Scripture to designate all of the northern kingdom, in various passages of Hosea such as Hosea 5: 5, " Israel " and " Ephraim " are not synonymous but refer to separate entities.

The prophet Isaiah walked naked and barefoot for about three years, predicting a forthcoming captivity in Egypt ; the prophet Ezekiel lay before a stone, which symbolized beleaguered Jerusalem, and though God instructed him to eat bread baked on human waste, ultimately used cow dung instead ; Hosea married a harlot to symbolize the infidelity of Israel before God.

Like Anan, Benjamin al-Nahawandi, and Ishmael al-Ukbari, Daniel forbade in the Diaspora the eating of those animals that were used for sacrifice, adding to the proofs of his predecessors others drawn from Hosea ix.

Something like it is also mentioned in Hosea 4: 12, although a staff or rod is used instead of arrows, which is rather rhabdomancy than belomancy.
