Flavius Philostratus ( c. AD 170 ), who wrote the biography Life of Apollonius of Tyana, refers to the phoenix as a bird living in India, but sometimes migrating to Egypt every five hundred years.

However, Philostratus, in his Life of Apollonius of Tyana, places him staying in the court of King Vardanes I of Parthia for a while, who ruled between c. 40 – 47 CE.

By far the most detailed source is the Life of Apollonius of Tyana, a lengthy, novelistic biography written by the sophist Philostratus at the request of empress Julia Domna.

There also survives, separately from the Life by Philostratus, a collection of letters of Apollonius, but at least some of these seem to be spurious.

Philostratus devoted two and a half of the eight books of his Life of Apollonius ( 1. 19 – 3. 58 ) to the description of a journey of his hero to India.

According to Philostratus ' Life, en route to the Far East, Apollonius reached Hierapolis Bambyce ( Manbij ) in Syria ( not Nineveh, as some scholars believed ), where he met Damis, a native of that city who became his lifelong companion.

Philostratus ’ Life and the anthology assembled by John Stobaeus contain purported letters of Apollonius.

Most of the biographical material comes from four sources: two are texts entitled Life of Apollonius found in the scholia on his work ( Vitae A and B ); a third is an entry in the 10th-century encyclopaedia the Suda ; and fourthly a 2nd-century BCE papyrus, P. Oxy.

The second Life names his mother as " Rhode ", but this is unlikely ; Rhodē means " Rhodian woman ", and is almost certainly derived from an attempt to explain Apollonius ' epithet " Rhodian ".

Later, in The Life of Apollonius of Tyana Greek writer Flavius Philostratus ( c. 170 – 247 ) wrote:

It was at the behest of Julia that Philostratus wrote his now famous Life of Apollonius, which comes to us in full form almost two thousand years later.

One interpretation posits the Lamia may have been a seductress, as in Philostratus ' Life of Apollonius of Tyana, where the philosopher Apollonius reveals to the young bridegroom, Menippus, his hastily-married wife is really a lamia, planning to devour him.

Greek identity, conceptions of the relationship between philosophers and monarchs and political ideas in Philostratus ' Life of Apollonius ( 1995 Amsterdam )

The Greek philosopher Apollonius of Tyana is related by Philostratus in Life of Apollonius Tyana to have visited India, and specifically the city of Taxila around 46 CE.

Purii says that the dates given by Philostratus in his Life of Apollonius of Tyana for Apollonius ' visit to Taxila, 43 – 44 AD, are within the period of the reign of Gondophares I, who also went by the Parthian name, Phraotes.

Flavius Philostratus ' Life of Apollonius of Tyana ( v. 2 ) says, " And they also say that the Islands of the Blessed are to be fixed by the limits of Libya where they rise towards the uninhabited promontory.

The rest of the canto consists mainly of paraphrases and quotations from Philostratus ' Life of Apollonius.

All that we know about Damis comes from Apollonius ' biographer Philostratus who wrote his Life of Apollonius of Tyana between 217 and 238.

These notes came into the possession of the empress Julia Domna, and it was she who commissioned Philostratus to write a biography of Apollonius, the extant Life of Apollonius of Tyana.

Vardanes is mentioned in Life of Apollonius Tyana as a benefactor to Apollonius of Tyana ( 2 – c.

He wrote a book called Al-Tibb min al-Kitab wa-al-Sunna ( Medicine from the Book and the Life of the Prophet ) describing the Islamic medical practices from the time of Muhammad.

The Devil, death, hell, and those not found written in the Book of Life are then thrown into Gehenna ( the Lake of Fire burning with brimstone ).

" ( Book of The Life of Sir William Phips first published anonymously in London in 1697 ) And Mather then included the letter, but, for his own reasons ( surely not brevity, Magnalia is huge ) left out the first, second, and eight sections, which would seem most encouraging to the judges to carry-on with their work.
