Life and Apollonius
Flavius Philostratus ( c. AD 170 ), who wrote the biography Life of Apollonius of Tyana, refers to the phoenix as a bird living in India, but sometimes migrating to Egypt every five hundred years.
However, Philostratus, in his Life of Apollonius of Tyana, places him staying in the court of King Vardanes I of Parthia for a while, who ruled between c. 40 – 47 CE.
By far the most detailed source is the Life of Apollonius of Tyana, a lengthy, novelistic biography written by the sophist Philostratus at the request of empress Julia Domna.
There also survives, separately from the Life by Philostratus, a collection of letters of Apollonius, but at least some of these seem to be spurious.
Philostratus devoted two and a half of the eight books of his Life of Apollonius ( 1. 19 – 3. 58 ) to the description of a journey of his hero to India.
According to Philostratus ' Life, en route to the Far East, Apollonius reached Hierapolis Bambyce ( Manbij ) in Syria ( not Nineveh, as some scholars believed ), where he met Damis, a native of that city who became his lifelong companion.
Philostratus ’ Life and the anthology assembled by John Stobaeus contain purported letters of Apollonius.
Most of the biographical material comes from four sources: two are texts entitled Life of Apollonius found in the scholia on his work ( Vitae A and B ); a third is an entry in the 10th-century encyclopaedia the Suda ; and fourthly a 2nd-century BCE papyrus, P. Oxy.
The second Life names his mother as " Rhode ", but this is unlikely ; Rhodē means " Rhodian woman ", and is almost certainly derived from an attempt to explain Apollonius ' epithet " Rhodian ".

The Greek philosopher Apollonius of Tyana is related by Philostratus in Life of Apollonius Tyana to have visited India, and specifically the city of Taxila around 46 CE.
Purii says that the dates given by Philostratus in his Life of Apollonius of Tyana for Apollonius ' visit to Taxila, 43 – 44 AD, are within the period of the reign of Gondophares I, who also went by the Parthian name, Phraotes.
