In 1237 and 1244 two towns, Cölln and Berlin were founded during the rule of Otto and Johann, grandsons of Margrave Albert the Bear, ( later they were united into one city, Berlin ).

Later, Bruno entered a monastery near Ravenna, founded by Otto, and underwent severe ascetic training under the guidance of St. Romuald.

The Quedlinburg castle complex, founded by Henry the Fowler and built up by Otto I the Great in 936, was an imperial palatinate of the Saxon emperors.

One of the most important events in those times was the foundation of the Diocese of Wrocław by the Polish Duke ( from 1025 king ) Bolesław the Brave in 1000, which, together with the Bishoprics of Kraków and Kołobrzeg, was placed under the Archbishopric of Gniezno in Greater Poland, founded by Otto III in 1000.

Berthold, Margrave in Bavaria ( died 980 ), was the ancestor of Otto I, Count of Scheyern ( died 1072 ), whose 3rd son Otto II, Count of Scheyern acquired the castle of Wittelsbach ( near Aichach ).

On Duke Otto II's death in 1253, the Wittelsbach possessions were divided between his sons: Henry became Duke of Lower Bavaria, and Louis II Duke of Upper Bavaria and Count Palatine of the Rhine.

In 1373 Otto, the last Wittelsbach regent of Brandenburg, released the country to the House of Luxembourg.

* June 21 – Philip of Swabia, King of Germany and rival to Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV, is assassinated in Bamberg by German Count Otto of Wittelsbach, because Philip had refused to give him his daughter in marriage.

He would have fallen on the spot under the battle-axe of his lifelong foe, Otto of Wittelsbach, had Frederick not intervened.
