Many prosimians use territorial marking ; for example, the Red-bellied Lemur creates territories for groups of two to ten individuals in the rainforests of eastern Madagascar by scent marking: the male Diademed Sifaka also scent marks defended territories in some of these same rainforests.

15 species and subspecies of lemurs are endemic and near-endemic to the ecoregion, including the Aye-aye ( Daubentonia madagascariensis ), the Hairy-eared Dwarf Lemur ( Allocebus trichotis ), both species of ruffed lemurs ( Varecia variegata, V. rubra ), the Indri ( Indri indri ), the Eastern Woolly Lemur ( Avahi laniger ), the Diademed Sifaka ( Propithecus diadema ), Milne-Edwards ' Sifaka ( P. edwardsi ), the Golden Bamboo Lemur ( Hapalemur aureus ), the Greater Bamboo Lemur ( Prolemur simus ), the Gray-headed Lemur ( Eulemur cinereiceps ), the Collared Brown Lemur ( E. collaris ), and the Red-bellied Lemur ( E. rubriventer ).

He is commemorated in the names of Verreaux's Eagle ( Aquila verreauxii ), Verreaux's Coua ( Coua verreauxi ), Verreaux's Sifaka ( Propithecus verreauxi ), the White-tipped Dove ( Leptotila verreauxi ) and the Golden Parrotbill ( Paradoxornis verreauxi ).

The orchid genus Neobathiea ( originally Bathiea ) was named in his honor, as was the indriid lemur Perrier's Sifaka ( Propithecus perrieri ).

A number of animals are named after him, including the Coquerel's Coua Coua coquereli ( Grandidier, 1867 ), the Coquerel's Sifaka Propithecus coquereli ( Milne-Edwards, 1867 ), and the Coquerel's Giant Mouse Lemur Mirza coquereli ( Grandidier, 1867 ), each of these species endemic to Madagascar.
