The New Jersey Turnpike Authority plans to widen the Parkway to three lanes in each direction from exit 80 in South Toms River, Ocean County to exit 30 in Somers Point, Atlantic County.

Neptune Township stretches from the Atlantic Ocean west to the Garden State Parkway ( exit 100 ).

The Garden State Parkway is located west of Ocean in neighboring Tinton Falls.

The nearby Garden State Parkway connects Ocean Grove with points north and south, such as New York City and Atlantic City.

Ocean Acres was started in the early 1960s, on a large tract west of the Garden State Parkway sprawling between Stafford Township and Barnegat.

In 2010, the Garden State Parkway exit 67 in Barnegat was redesigned to redirect the southbound exit ramp onto the Lighthouse Drive entrance to Ocean Acres.

Early growth in the township started in the 1950s, starting with the construction of large resort communities of Beach Haven West and Ocean Acres, which were built around the same time as the completion of the Garden State Parkway and the expansion of Route 72, the latter which formerly ran along the two-lane Bay Avenue.

The first parkways in the United States were developed during the late 19th Century by landscape architects Frederick Law Olmsted and Beatrix Farrand as roads segregated for pedestrians, bicyclists, equestrians, and horse carriages, such as the Eastern Parkway, which is credited as the world's first parkway, and Ocean Parkway in Brooklyn, New York.

In New Jersey, the Garden State Parkway, connecting the urban Northeast U. S. with the rural Atlantic Ocean shoreline and Atlantic City, is restricted to buses and non-commercial traffic north of the Route 18 interchange but is one of the busiest toll roads in the country.

Muncie Island, ( was just north of Oak Beach, island was depleted for the construction of Ocean Parkway ) was host to one of the most elite sanatoriums and nearby Saltaire was host to the Surf Hotel offering several hundred rooms to guests.

The route passes through mostly marshland along its journey, intersecting the Garden State Parkway at a partial interchange and County Route 619 ( Ocean Drive ).

After crossing over the Cooper Bridge, the highway parallels its former alignment for a short distance, intersecting with the Ocean Drive and Gardens Parkway.

Two of the yard tracks end before Ocean Parkway station, after which the four remaining tracks merge into two to climb up and over two more tracks of the IND Culver Line ( train ), which enter from the north.
