Butterflies include Silver-washed Fritillary ( Argynnis paphia ), Dark Green Fritillary ( Argynnis aglaja ), Pearl-bordered Fritillary ( Boloria euphrosyne ), Holby Blue ( Celastrina argiolus ) and Brown Argus ( Aricia agestis ).
Strong populations of other downland species such as Chalkhill Blue Polyommatus coridon and Dark Green Fritillary Argynnis aglaja are found, and of note here is the occurrence of Grayling Hipparchia semele, a butterfly rarely found away from the coast.
The Silver-washed Fritillary ( Argynnis paphia ) was in decline in the UK for much of the 1970s and 1980s, but seems to be coming back to many of its old territories.
