Intel and i860
Soon every major vendor was releasing a RISC design, including the AT & T CRISP, AMD 29000, Intel i860 and Intel i960, Motorola 88000, DEC Alpha.
Intel used the StrongARM to replace their ailing line of RISC processors, the i860 and i960.
The MMX instruction set was developed from a similar concept first used on the Intel i860.
The Intel Paragon could have 1000 to 4000 Intel i860 processors in various configurations, and was ranked the fastest in the world in 1993.
In addition to the above systems, at around the same period ( i. e. 1989-1990 ), Intel implemented VLIW in the Intel i860, their first 64bit microprocessor ; the i860 was also the first processor to implement VLIW on a single chip.
In the early 1990s, Intel introduced the i860 RISC microprocessor.
Supercomputing moved away from the SIMD approach when inexpensive scalar MIMD approaches based on commodity processors such as the Intel i860 XP became more powerful, and interest in SIMD waned.
It developed out of a similar unit introduced on the Intel i860, and earlier the Intel i750 video pixel processor.
When originally developed, for the Intel i860, the use of integer math made sense ( both 2D and 3D calculations required it ), but as graphics cards that did much of this became common, integer SIMD in the CPU became somewhat redundant for graphical applications.
The system was based on the INMOS transputer microprocessor, later also using SPARC and Intel i860 processors.
As the performance of the transputer became less competitive towards the end of the 1980s ( the follow-on T9000 transputer being beset with delays ) Meiko added the ability to supplement the transputers with Intel i860 processors.
The Intel i860 ( also known as 80860 ) was a RISC microprocessor from Intel, first released in 1989.
The i860 was one of Intel's first attempts at an entirely new, high-end instruction set since the failed Intel i432 from the 1980s.
The IEEE and Intel referred to the design as the " i860 64-Bit Microprocessor ".
Intel i860 instructions acted on data sizes from 8-bit through 128-bit.
Three i860 XP-50 CPUs on a circuit board from Intel's Intel Paragon | Paragon XP / S Supercomputer.
The Intel i860 XR
Intel for a time tested the viability of the i860 as a workstation CPU, competing with the MIPS Architecture chips and others.
