It stipulated that a brother of King Louis was to marry Joan of Toulouse, daughter of Raymond VII of Toulouse, and so in 1237 Alphonse married her.

The claim of the now deceased Philippa of Toulouse was pressed again when Louis VII besieged Toulouse in 1141, in right of his wife Eleanor of Aquitaine, the granddaughter of Philippa, but without result.

Busembaum's Medulla had been burnt in Toulouse in 1757 because of its justification of regicide, deemed particularly scandalous after Damiens ' assassination attempt against Louis XV.

The period between Henry's accession and the birth of Eleanor's youngest son was turbulent: Aquitaine, as was the norm, defied the authority of Henry as Eleanor's husband ; attempts to claim Toulouse, the rightful inheritance of Eleanor's grandmother and father, were made, ending in failure ; the news of Louis of France's widowhood and remarriage was followed by the marriage of Henry's son ( young Henry ) to Louis ' daughter Marguerite ; and, most climactically, the feud between the King and Thomas Becket, his Chancellor, and later Archbishop of Canterbury.

Henry married the powerful Eleanor of Aquitaine, who reigned over the Duchy of Aquitaine and had a tenuous claim to Toulouse and Auvergne in southern France, in addition to being the former wife of Louis VII of France.

However, in 785, wary of the customs his son may have been taking in Aquitaine, Charlemagne sent for him to Aquitaine and Louis presented himself at the Royal Council of Paderborn dressed up in Basque costumes along with other youths in the same garment, which may have made a good impression in Toulouse, since the Basques of Vasconia were a mainstay of the Aquitanian army.

When he was 15, Louis ' mother brought an end to the Albigensian Crusade in 1229 after signing an agreement with Count Raymond VII of Toulouse that cleared the latter's father of wrongdoing.

His notable acts as pope include the unprecedented privilege of empowering Francis of Apt, a Franciscan friar, to confer the clerical tonsure and minor orders on Louis of Toulouse ( who would later become Bishop of Toulouse ), the son of the King of Sicily.

Charles was the youngest son of Louis VIII of France and Blanche of Castile, and hence younger brother of Louis IX of France and Alfonso II of Toulouse.

The affection of his mother Blanche seems largely to have been bestowed upon his brother Louis ; and Louis tended to favour his other younger brothers, Robert of Artois and Alphonse of Toulouse.
