Released around 1984, the original MPU-401 was an external breakout box providing MIDI IN / MIDI OUT / MIDI THRU / TAPE IN / TAPE OUT / MIDI SYNC connectors, for use with a separately-sold interface card / cartridge (" MPU-401 interface kit ") inserted into a computer system.

The MIDI SYNC, TAPE IN, TAPE OUT, METRONOME OUT connectors was removed, but a second MIDI IN connector was added.

The RM1x has a Yamaha AWM2 tone generator block, producing sound in response to sequenced events, the controller block, and from the MIDI IN connector.

The sockets on the rear of the keyboard consist of a DC 9V adapter socket, a phones / output jack, sustain / assignable jack, and MIDI IN / OUT terminals.

The MIDI OUT capability of the instrument means that it can be used to play sounds from any other MIDI instrument such as a synthesizer.
