Barnabas is usually identified as the cousin of Mark the Evangelist on the basis of Colossians 4.

Although many assume that the biblical Mark the Cousin of Barnabas ( Colossians 4: 10 ) is the same as John Mark ( Acts 12: 12, 25 ; 13: 5, 13 ; 15: 37 ) and Mark the Evangelist, the traditionally believed author of the Gospel of Mark, according to Hippolytus of Rome, the three " Mark " s are distinct persons.

In 1513 he went to Rome, where he painted a Peter and Paul, now in the Pinacoteca Vaticana, while from the following years are the St. Mark Evangelist of Palazzo Pitti in Florence and the frescoes in the Dominican convent of Pian di Mugnone.

These qualities were alleged against him as defects, and to prove that his style was not the result of want of power, he painted the magnificent figure of the St. Mark Evangelist ( ranked as his masterpiece ), and the undraped figure of Saint Sebastian.

According to tradition and some early church writers, the author is Mark the Evangelist, the companion of the apostle Peter.

A tradition arising in the 2nd century ascribes it to Mark the Evangelist ( also known as John Mark ), the companion of Peter, on whose memories it is supposedly based.
