The Minoan pottery was characterized by elaborate painted decoration with natural themes.

Minoan is the name given by modern historians to the people of ancient Crete ( c. 2800 – 1100 BC ), known for their elaborate and richly decorated palaces, and for their pottery painted with floral and marine motifs.

They have also been found on the walls of Egyptian tombs and on Minoan, Greek, and Chinese pottery, as well as on bricks and tiles from ancient Babylon and Rome.

The archaeology department includes the bequest of Arthur Evans and so has an excellent collection of Greek and Minoan pottery.

During the 1970s, further archaeological excavations in Caria revealed Mycenean buildings at Iasus ( with two " Minoan " levels underneath them ), as well as Protogeometric and Geometric material remains ( i. e. cemeteries and pottery ).

The Minoan economy also supported several industries such as the textile, pottery and metalwork industries.

Lerna V is continuous with the preceding phase, distinguished largely by new styles in pottery with the sudden, peaceful introduction of matte-painted ware, the thick-slipped Argive version of gray Minyan ware, and a vigorous increase in the kinds of imported wares, coming from the Cyclades and Crete ( Middle Minoan IA ).

Certain characteristics of the Butmir pottery designs ( e. g. its resemblance with Kamares style Minoan pottery ) made some suggest a connection to the Minoan culture on Crete.

Some very early polychrome pottery has been excavated on Minoan Crete such as at the Bronze Age site of Phaistos.

Artifacts found at the site include a terracotta bull figurine, a bronze statuette and Late Minoan I pottery.

In general, painted pottery decors are rectilinear and abstract until Middle Helladic III, when Cycladic and Minoan influences inspire a variety of curvilinear and even representational motifs.

Remains of a mansion with Minoan pottery date from Period I.

Minoan pottery is defined by its technical perfection and dynamic swirling ornament and its art is characterized by its naturalistic and rhythmic movement.
