Taoist philosophy became a different, common theme for other poets, and a genre emphasizing true feeling emerged led by Ruan Ji ( 210-263 ).

The scholars, Ruan Ji, Ji Kang, Ruan Xian, Shan Tao, Xiang Xiu, Wang Rong and Liu Ling, held progressive political views but were unable to realize their ambitions.

In response, Qian sent three of the " Eight Corps " commanders, Du Leng ( 杜稜 ), Ruan Jie ( 阮結 ), and Cheng Ji ( 成及 ) to attack Xue.

Liu Ling, Ruan Ji, Ruan Xian, Xiang Xiu, Wang Rong and Shan Tao were the other six sages who made up the group, besides Xi Kang, who was especially close to Ruan Ji ; their relationship was described as " stronger than metal and fragrant as orchids ".

The wife of Shan Tao was said to be impressed by Ruan Ji and Xi Kang's prowess when she spied on them during sex.
