Wedel and Jarlsberg
After Peder Anker died in 1824, Herman Wedel Jarlsberg took over the works, passing it on to his son Harald Wedel Jarlsberg in 1840.
The Wedel Jarlsberg family were among the last nobility in Norway and were active both in national and local politics.
Field Marshal Wedel, who had become commanding General in Norway in 1681, received the title Wedel af Jarlsberg in 1684 and introduced the name Jarlsberg, which means ‘ Earl ’ s Hill ’.
Bishop Fallize of Norway asked that it be placed in this chapel, and was unveiled by Baron Wedel Jarlsberg.
The first mention of this Norwegian fortress is in a letter from Field Marshal Wedel Jarlsberg to the King in 1683.
Owned by the Church in the Middle Ages, it passed through several owners until 1909, when Fritz Wedel Jarlsberg bought it.
