Then, following the programme he outlined in his talk at the 1958 International Congress of Mathematicians, he introduced the theory of schemes, developing it in detail in his Éléments de géométrie algébrique ( EGA ) and providing the new more flexible and general foundations for algebraic geometry that has been adopted in the field since that time.

Jean Alexandre Eugène Dieudonné (; 1 July 1906 – 29 November 1992 ) was a French mathematician, notable for research in abstract algebra and functional analysis, for close involvement with the Nicolas Bourbaki pseudonymous group and the Éléments de géométrie algébrique project of Alexander Grothendieck, and as a historian of mathematics, particularly in the fields of functional analysis and algebraic topology.

Of the numerous books and papers he wrote the most important is his Éléments de pharmacie théorique et pratique ( 9 editions, 1762 – 1818 ).
