Muscovy was then ruled by the Muscovite monarchy, starting with Ivan III ( 1462 – 1505 ), who expanded Muscovy, and ending with Ivan IV, who claimed the title " Tsar of Russia ".

An even earlier example of a puppet state ( as well as a vassal state ) is Wallachia, which was partially de facto ruled by the Ottoman Empire from 1462 when Radu the Handsome was placed on the throne after his older brother Vlad III was banished from Wallachia and interned by Hungary.

Although Vlad had great success against the Ottoman armies, the two Christian rulers disagreed in 1462, leading to Matthias imprisoning Vlad in Buda.

Two decades later, Vlad III the Impaler ( 1448, 1456 – 1462, 1476 ), notorious as the model for the Dracula legend, turned against the Ottoman Empire.

The response was a massive invasion led by Mehmed II who drove Vlad III from the throne and replaced him with his brother, Radu III the Fair ( 1462 – 1475 ).

He was posthumously dubbed Vlad the Impaler ( Romanian: Vlad Țepeș ), and was a three-time Voivode of Wallachia, ruling mainly from 1456 to 1462, the period of the incipient Ottoman conquest of the Balkans.

In the winter of 1462, Vlad crossed the Danube and devastated the entire Bulgarian land in the area between Serbia and the Black Sea.

Commanding at best only 30, 000 to 40, 000 men ( depending of the source ), Vlad was unable to stop the Ottomans from crossing the Danube at June 4, 1462 and entering Wallachia.

After the Sipahis ' incursions failed to subdue Vlad, the few remaining Sipahi were killed in a night raid by Vlad III in 1462.
