In 1470 the great west window at the cathedral was completed and finally, in around 1490, what is now the Lady Chapel was built.

On 12 July 1470, during the Ottoman – Venetian War of 1463 – 1479 and after a protracted and bloody siege, the well-fortified city of Negropont ( Chalkis ) was wrested from Venice by Mehmed II and the whole island fell into the hands of the Ottoman Empire.

However, he died, apparently by poison, at Barcelona on 16 December 1470.

Piri Reis ( full name Hacı Ahmed Muhiddin Piri-Hadji Ahmed Muhiddin Piri, Ahmet ibn-i el-Haç Mehmet El Karamani ; Reis was a Turkish military rank akin to that of captain ) was an Ottoman admiral, geographer and cartographer born between 1465 and 1470, and died in 1554 or 1555.

In November 1470, Parliament declared that Prince Edward and his descendants were Henry's heirs to the throne ; Clarence would become King only if the Lancastrian line of succession failed.

The nobility attached itself to one side or the other ( and often changed sides ), but eventually in 1461 Henry was defeated by Richard's son, who became King Edward IV ; Henry was incarcerated in the Tower of London for nine years, but the wars continued and in October 1470 Edward was forced to flee to the continent and Henry was restored to the throne.

In 1470 he made the monument for the Duchess of Amalfi, Mary of Aragon, in the Church of Monte Oliveto, Naples ; the relief of the Nativity over the altar in the same place is also probably his.

For unknown reasons John Mielecki did not go on to found the city ; it was eventually established by his two sons, John and Bernard, by an Act of 18 December 1470.
