Following her death in 1578, Anne Stanley's grandmother, Margaret Stanley, Countess of Derby, assumed the senior position among the descendants of Mary Tudor in terms of inheritance of the rights to the English crown upon the death of her cousin Elizabeth I. Margaret died in 1596, and, her son and Anne's father Ferdinando having predeceased her, Anne inherited her claims.

In 1578 Henry created the Order of the Holy Spirit to commemorate his becoming first King of Poland and later King of France on the Feast of Pentecost and gave it precedence over the earlier Order of St. Michael, which had lost much of its original prestige through its having been awarded too frequently and too readily.

Birague was named chancellor of France as a reward for his participation, March 17, 1573 ; he was also promoted to the cardinalate February 21, 1578 under the insistence of Henry III, though he never went to Rome to receive the red hat.
