German music, sponsored by the upper classes, came of age under composers Johann Sebastian Bach ( 1685 – 1750 ), Joseph Haydn ( 1732 – 1809 ), and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart ( 1756 – 1791 ).

Perhaps the most celebrated composer who wrote for the harpsichord was J. S. Bach ( 1685 – 1750 ), whose solo works ( for instance, the Well-Tempered Clavier and the Goldberg Variations ), continue to be performed very widely, often on the piano.

The house is over 600 years old and stands near the place of the house where Bach was born on March 21, 1685.

Many later settlers were of German origin and after the revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685, French Huguenot refugees.
