The 18th century, alike in its literature and its theology, was a favourite study, as is illustrated by his contribution ( Tendencies of Religious Thought in England, 1688 – 1750 ) to the once famous Essays and Reviews ( 1860 ), and by his edition of Pope's Essay on Man ( 1869 ), etc.

Thenceforward he devoted his whole time to a systematic examination of the French caves, his first publication on the subject being The Antiquity of Man in Western Europe ( 1860 ), followed in 1861 by New Researches on the Coexistence of Man and of the Great Fossil Mammifers characteristic of the Last Geological Period.

Along with various other nearby streets, it is named after the family of Francis Pigott Stainsby Conant, MP for Reading Lieutenant Governor of the Isle of Man 1860 — 1863.

Other noted left-wing thinkers in the late 19th century weighed in on the subject including Sir George Archdall Reid ( 1860 — 1929 ) in 1896 who published a work The Present Evolution of Man, and the Russian anarchist Peter Kropotkin ( 1842 — 1921 ) in 1902 published Mutual Aid: A Factor of Evolution, which particularly opposed the " nature red in tooth and claw " concept.

In 1860 he finished working on the " The Tragedy of Man ".

Among his numerous works may be mentioned Illustrated Natural History ( 1853 ), Animal Traits and Characteristics ( 1860 ), Common Objects of the Sea Shore ( 1857 ), The Uncivilized Races, or Natural History of Man ( 1870 ), Out of Doors ( 1874 ) ( a book that was quoted by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle in his Sherlock Holmes story " The Adventure of the Lion's Mane "), Field Naturalist's Handbook ( with T. Wood ) ( 1879 – 80 ), books on gymnastics, sport, etc., and an edition of White's Selborne.

The term “ political psychology ” was first introduced by the ethnologist Adolph Bastian in his book Man in History ( 1860 ).

In 1860 Isabelle Duncan, wrote Pre-Adamite Man, Or, The Story of Our Old Planet and Its Inhabitants, Told by Scripture & Science.

In 1860, upon the death of Joseph Brown, Kelly became registrar and vicar of the Kirkmichael parish on the Isle of Man, while continuing as chaplain to Powys.

Other awards include Order of the Tower and Sword from the kingdom of Portugal ( 1860 ); and Italy conferred on him the insignia of chevalier of the Order of Saints Maurice and Lazarus in 1864.

Other structures in the grounds listed at Grade II are the Pheasant House dating from about 1870, an Italian white marble wellhead in the centre of the courtyard of the house dating from the 18th century and probably brought to the house from Venice in about 1900, sandstone kennels in an H-plan dating from around 1870, a pair of gardener's cottages dated 1871, terrace revetment walls to the west of the house containing some 17th-century masonry with later repairs, the lodge, gate piers and gates on Lyme Park Drive, the forward gatepiers to Lyme Park Drive, dating from the late 17th century and moved to their present position about 1860, the gate piers in Red Lane, and the gate piers, gates and railings to the north of the north front of the house.

The Other Sheep ( later World Mission ) magazine began publication in 1913 under founding editor Charles Allen McConnell ( born 19 June 1860 in Valparaiso, Indiana ; died c. 1950 ), who was NPH manager from 1916 to 1918.

Other corps were very quickly formed in 1860 at five further schools: Eton, Harrow, Hurstpierpoint, Rugby and Tonbridge ; in the absence of further evidence it seems fair to say that all seven schools should be equally credited with seniority, with a given date of 1860.

Other churches in the area include the bluestone Church of All Nations ( a Uniting Church ) in Palmerston Street dating from 1860, a Romanian Orthodox Church on Queensberry Street, a Salvation Army Church, the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Chinese Church of Christ and the Christian Chapel of the Church of Christ, built in 1865.

Other Latter Day Saints living in the Midwest continued to support lineal succession and in 1860, they invited Joseph Smith III to become President of what would later be called the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, known today as Community of Christ.

Other minor works included Daniel Manin ( 1860 ), La Russie et l ' Europe ( 1866 ); Etudes d ' archéologie celtique ( 1872 ); Les Napoléon et les frontières de la France ( 1874 ).

Other writers include: Maurus Carnot ( 1846 – 1935 ), Giachen Michel Hay ( 1860 – 1920 ), Gian Fontana ( 1897 – 1935 ), Leza Uffer ( 1912 – 1982 ), Armon Planta ( 1917 – 1986 ), Gion Luregn Derungs, Gion Deplazes ( born 1918 ), Cla Biert ( 1920 – 1981 ), Andri Peer ( 1921 – 1985 ), Martin Suter, Tim Krohn.

Other than the already noted slight design changes made in 1860, 1864, and 1886, the series continued without major varieties from 1859 to 1909.

Other collections of his tales, especially charming when they deal with his native region and its people, appeared in 1859, 1860, and 1866.

From 1860 to 1864 academic and clerical circles were agitated by the storm which followed the publication of Essays and Reviews, a volume to which two of his most valued friends, Benjamin Jowett and Frederick Temple, had been contributors.

Challis took issue with Charles Wycliffe Goodwin's views on Genesis expressed in Essays and Reviews ( 1860 ).

In 1860 seven liberal Anglican theologians caused a much greater furore by publishing a manifesto titled Essays and Reviews in which they sought to make textual criticism of the Bible available to the ordinary reader, as well as supporting Darwin.

Around February 1860 liberal theologians entered the fray, when seven produced a manifesto titled Essays and Reviews.

For many years Archdeacon Denison represented the extreme High Tory party not only in politics but in the Church, regarding all progressive movements in education or theology as abomination, and vehemently repudiating the higher criticism from the days of Essays and Reviews ( 1860 ) to those of Lux Mundi ( 1890 ).

Following the publication of Essays and Reviews in 1860, in which Williams compared those opposed to the new biblical criticism then coming out of Germany to “ degenerate senators before Tiberius ”, the editor of the paper and Williams were tried and condemned for heresy in the court of arches ; their acquittal, on appeal to the judicial committee of the privy council, afforded a valuable protection to liberty of thought within the church of England.

Essays and Reviews, edited by John William Parker, published in March 1860, is a broad-church volume of seven essays on Christianity.

He contributed to the publications of the Cambridge Antiquarian Society and in 1860 wrote one of the articles in Essays and Reviews, to which he was the only lay contributor, writing alongside such great theologians as Rowland Williams and Henry Bristow Wilson.

In London, where his practice was not large, he wrote music and art criticism ; was for a time editor of Literary Gazette ; was the only layman among the seven contributors to the much talked of Essays and Reviews ( 1860 ); and, because of his Greek and Hebrew scholarship, was frequently consulted by the Revisers of the New Testament.
