In the 17th century, under the orders of Pope Paul V, the Secret Archives were separated from the Vatican Library, where scholars had some very limited access to them, and remained absolutely closed to outsiders until 1881, when Pope Leo XIII opened them to researchers, more than a thousand of whom now examine its documents each year.

Émile Maximilien Paul Littré ( 1 February 1801 – 2 June 1881 ) was a French lexicographer and philosopher, best known for his Dictionnaire de la langue française, commonly called " The Littré ".

In 1881 the name of the commune was changed into Évry-Petit-Bourg at the request of entrepreneur Paul Decauville, owner of Ateliers de Petit-Bourg, a large boiler works located in Évry and at the time the largest employer in the area.

Research by Prof. Haemig of Luther Seminary, St. Paul, points to Johann Hinrich Wichern ( 1808 – 1881 ), a Protestant pastor in Germany and a pioneer in urban mission work among the poor as the inventor of the modern Advent wreath.

It has also been briefly applied to the presidency of the South African Republic from 1881 to 1883, when it was jointly governed by M. W. Pretorius, Paul Kruger and P. J. Joubert.
