During the 1914-18 War, German prisoners of War were kept in the Citadel.

During World War I, Holzminden was the site of a large civilian internment camp on the outskirts of the town, which held up to 10, 000 Polish, Russian, Belgian and French nationals, including women and children ( 1914-18 ); and also of a smaller prisoner-of-war camp for captured British and British Empire officers ( 1917-18 ).

The first strategic bombing efforts took place during World War I ( 1914-18 ), initially by Russians with their Sikorsky Ilya Muromets bomber ( the first heavy four-engine aircraft ), and by the Germans using zeppelins or long-range multi-engine Gotha aircraft.

The entrance to the building at James Street has a fine mosaic of South America set into the floor, also near the James Street entrance inside Albion House was a wooden war memorial listing the members of staff who " Gave their lives for their country " in the 1914-18 War.
