A decade and a half later, the Polish anthropology student, Bronisław Malinowski ( 1884 – 1942 ), was beginning what he expected to be a brief period of fieldwork in the old model, collecting lists of cultural items, when the outbreak of the First World War stranded him in New Guinea.

The city's first major industry was born in 1899 when Henry W. Hibbs, 1862 – 1942, a native of Newport, North Carolina, established his wholesale fish business at the end of the railroad pier, which extended out to the shipping channel.

After receiving critical acclaim for her starring role in the 1942 Damon Runyon film The Big Street ( with Henry Fonda ), Ball came to the attention of MGM, which bought out her contract.

That tour ended in July 1942, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt ordered congressmen serving in the military to resign one of the two positions, and Lodge, who chose to remain in the Senate, was ordered by Secretary of War Henry Stimson to return to Washington.

It was named after Major General Joseph Henry Pendleton ( 1860 – 1942 ), who had long advocated setting up a training base for the Marine Corps on the west coast.
