After serving in the United States Army with the 101st Airborne in Vietnam, Nagel attended the Chouinard Art Institute in Los Angeles in 1969, and in that same year he received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from California State University, Fullerton.
The Chouinard Art Institute was a professional art school founded in 1921 in Los Angeles, California, by Nelbert Murphy Chouinard ( 1879 – 1969 ).
Between 1961 and 1969 Chouinard remained as an independent, functioning entity, and it admitted and graduated students under the corporate entity of Chouinard Art Institute.
To its students, faculty and the general public, Chouinard formally became a part of the California Institute of the Arts in early 1969.
