* 1978 – U. S. President Jimmy Carter declares a federal emergency at Love Canal due to toxic waste that had been negligently disposed of.

In 1978, Love was arrested in Portland for shoplifting a t-shirt and was sent to Hillcrest Youth Correctional Facility in Salem, Oregon, spending the following two years in and out of juvenile hall and numerous foster homes.

However, in late 1978, with the release of her album Love Tracks, she climbed the pop charts again because of her song " I Will Survive ".

In 1978, his novel A Love in Germany about an affair between a Polish POW and a German woman in World War II stirred up a debate about the past of Hans Filbinger, Minister-President of Baden-Württemberg who had been a Navy lawyer and judge at the end of World War II.
