This marked the beginning of a four year power struggle for supremacy over China between Liu Bang and Xiang Yu, from 206 BC to 202 BC, known as the Chu – Han Contention.

Liu Bang later renounced the truce and attacked Xiang Yu, eventually defeating the latter at the Battle of Gaixia in 202 BC and unifying China under his rule.

Emperor Gao ( 256 BC or 247 BC – 1 June 195 BC ), commonly known by his temple name Gaozu (), personal name Liu Bang, was the founder and first emperor of the Han Dynasty, ruling over China from 202 BC to 195 BC.

Liu Bang's forces defeated Xiang Yu at the Battle of Gaixia in 202 BC and Xiang committed suicide.

Two months later, as Zhang Liang predicted, Han Xin and Peng Yue arrived with their armies and formed a coordinated attack on Western Chu together with Liu Bang's force, defeating Xiang Yu at the Battle of Gaixia in 202 BC.

In 202 BC, after his victory over Xiang Yu, Liu Bang declared himself Emperor of China and became known as Emperor Gaozu of Han.

In 202 BC, Han armies led by Liu Bang, Han Xin and Peng Yue attacked Western Chu from three sides and trapped Xiang Yu's army, which was low on supplies, in the Battle of Gaixia.

However, Liu Bang feared Han Xin's growing influence and gradually reduced his authority, demoting him to " Marquis of Huaiyin " in late 202 BC.

Liu Bang eventually defeated Xiang Yu at the Battle of Gaixia in 202 BC and unified China under his rule.

The title originated, however, from Liu Bang ( Emperor Gao of Han )' s father Liu Taigong, who was honored as such after Liu Bang declared himself emperor in 202, even though Liu Taigong was never emperor himself.
