Beginning in 1972, the 301st Fighter Wing ( under various designations ) has trained at Carswell as an Air Force Reserve Command unit, training for tactical air missions, including counter-air, interdiction, and close air support.

On October 1, 1993, the Air Force Reserve's 301st Fighter Wing assumed base responsibilities, establishing Carswell as Carswell Air Reserve Station.

Currently, the portion of the base occupied by the Texas Air National Guard's 136th Airlift Wing, Air Force Reserve Command's 301st Fighter Wing, Air Force Reserve Command's Headquarters – 10th Air Force, the 610th Security Forces Squadron, Naval Air Force Reserve's Fleet Logistics Support Wing, Fleet Logistics Support Squadron 59 ( VR-59 ), Marine Aircraft Group 41 ( MAG 41 ), Marine Aviation Logistics Squadron 41, Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 112 ( VMFA-112 ) and Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 234 ( VMGR-234 ) is still called Carswell Field.

By the end of August 1942, the Bolero movement had transferred 386 airplanes: 164 P-38's of the 1st and 14th Fighter Groups ; 119 B-17's of the 97th, 301st, and 92nd Bomb Groups ; and 103 C-47's of the 60th and 64th Troop Carrier Groups.

SAC's 301st Air Refueling Wing arrived from Rickenbacker AFB, Ohio and was responsible for the operation of KC-135R Stratotankers, refueling fighter, bomber, airlift, special operations and strategic reconnaissance aircraft worldwide.

A major restructuring occurred in 1989 when SAC relocated the 40th Air Division to Malmstrom AFB and assigned it host responsibilities for both the newly activated 301st ARW and the 341st Strategic Missile Wing.

From July 1994 until December 1997 the RPA had six brigades, as designated in the Arusha Accords: 402nd in Kigali and Kigali Rurale Prefecture ; 201st in Kibungo, Umatura, and Byumba Prefectures ; 301st in Butare, Gikongoro, and Cyangugu Prefectures ; 305th in Gitatama and Kibuye Prefectures ; and 211th in Gisenyi and Ruhengeri Prefectures.

During the early 1960s the company bid on the United States Air Force's TFX ( Tactical Fighter, eXperimental ) project for a new low-level " penetrator ".

In July 1971, the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing, flying the A-7 Corsair II aircraft, was activated at the base and the previously assigned F-4s were moved to Luke AFB, near Phoenix, Arizona.

It was also that year the 355th Tactical Fighter Wing accepted the first A-10 Thunderbolt II.

Operational considerations were provided by experienced Air Force combat pilots Col. Ken Kronlund and Col. Cliff Miller as well as valuable inputs from the Air Force Tactical Fighter Weapons Center.

In July 1990, the 163d Tactical Fighter Group changed missions and was re-designated the 163rd Tactical Reconnaissance Group, equipped with RF-4C Phantom II aircraft.
