The 4133d SW was redesignated as the 319th Bombardment Wing ( 319th BW ) on 1 February 1963 in a name-only redesigation and was assigned to SAC's Second Air Force, 810th Strategic Aerospace Division.

The 319th Bombardment Wing began planning and training to support such a mission to counter worldwide regional threats.

The 319th Women ’ s Flying Training Detachment ( WFTD ) at the Municipal Airport ( now Hobby Airport ) in Houston, Texas, with Cochran as commanding officer, and the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron, the 2nd Ferrying Group at New Castle ( Delaware ) Army Air Base ( now New Castle Airport ).

The parachute assault force consisted of HHC, 173rd Airborne Brigade ; 1st Battalion ( Airborne ), 508th Infantry Regiment ; 2nd Battalion ( Airborne ), 503rd Infantry Regiment ; 74th Infantry Detachment ( Long Range Surveillance ); D Battery ( Airborne ), 319th Field Artillery Regiment ; 173rd Support Company ( Combat ); 501st Support Company ( Forward ), 250th Forward Surgical Team ; ODA (-), 2nd Battalion, 10th Special Forces Group ( Airborne ); 4th Air Support Operations Group ( USAFE ); and the 86th Contingency Response Group ( assigned to the 86th Airlift Wing ( USAFE ).

* August 5 – The Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron ( WAFS ) and the 319th Women's Flying Training Detachment ( WFTD ), both organizations of civilian women ferry pilots employed by the U. S. Army Air Forces Air Transport Command, are merged to form the Women Airforce Service Pilots ( WASP ).

* September 15 – The United States Army Air Forces Air Transport Command establishes the 319th Women's Flying Training Detachment ( WFTD ), a second organization of civilian women ferry pilots and rival of the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron ( WAFS ) established five days earlier.

The Guinea Pigs started training at Houston Municipal ( Texas ) Airport on November 16, 1942, as part of the 319th Army Air Force Women's Flying Training Detachment ( AAFWFTD ).

Three years later, the 71st was redesignated as the 319th FIS, which remained on alert until 30 June 1972 when the active duty Air Defense interceptor mission at Malmstrom was phased down and inactivated.

The host unit at Grand Forks is the 319th Air Base Wing ( 319 ABW ) assigned to the United States Air Force Expeditionary Center of the Air Mobility Command ( AMC ).

The 319th Air Base Wing is commanded by Colonel Timothy E. Bush and the wing Command Chief Master Sergeant is CMSgt David E. Carlson.

Grand Forks AFB is the home of the Air Mobility Command's ( AMC ) 319th Air Base Wing ( 319 ABW ).

On February 1, 1993 the Air Combat Command dropped the 319th Bomb Wing's primary nuclear mission and gave the wing the primary mission of B-1B conventional bombardment operations.

The base was later transferred to the new Air Mobility Command ( AMC ) in 1994 following the departure of the last B-1B aircraft, redesignation of the 319 BW as the 319th Air Refueling Wing ( 319 ARW ) and associated transfer of KC-135 aircraft assets to AMC, and transfer of strategic ICBM assets to Air Force Space Command ( AFSPC ).

On March 1, 2011, the wing was redesignated as the 319th Air Base Wing ( 319 ABW ).

* October 1, 1993 The Air Force redesignated the 319th Bomb Wing as the 319th Air Refueling Wing, reassigned it to Air Mobility Command, and reassigned the 905th Air Refueling Squadron to the wing.

In June 2005 Legion was redeployed to RC South ( Kandahar ) under Task Force Gun Devil ( 3d Battalion, 319th Field Artillery ).

As the activities in Southeast Asia decreased, the 319th Bomb Wing focused its full efforts on training crews to fly strategic strike missions.

It would distribute the 319th Air Refueling Wing ’ s KC-135R aircraft to the 6th Air Mobility Wing ( 6 AMW ) at MacDill AFB, FL ( four aircraft ) and several other installations.

The U. S. 317th Infantry Regiment attacked in assault boats across the Rhine from Mainz while the 319th Infantry attacked across the Main River near Hochheim am Main.

During this operation, 845 members of the 2nd Battalion, 503rd Infantry ( Airborne ), the 319th Artillery ( Airborne ), and elements of H & H company of the 173rd Airborne Brigade made the only combat jump in Vietnam.

* John Brown Lookout-Located north of 319th and Lookout Road, this high point in the county was used as a Civil War lookout.

In 1973, the 319th Bomb Wing acquired the AGM-69 Short Range Attack Missile ( SRAM ), replacing the older AGM-28 Hound Dog air-to-ground missile aboard its B-52Hs.

The 319th Wing was redesignated as the 319th Bomb Wing.

In a few cases, individual squadron, such as the 319th Fighter-Interceptor Squadron, were directly controlled by an organization higher than either wing or group level.
