Socrates ( 469 BC – 399 BC ) was one of the first Greek philosophers to encourage both scholars and the common citizen to turn their attention from the outside world to the condition of humankind.

No firm dates can be assigned to this emperor's life or reign, but he is conventionally considered to have reigned from 313 – 399.

Although the Nihon Shoki states that Nintoku ruled from 313 – 399, modern research suggests those dates are likely inaccurate.

The terms also appear in the same period in Evagrius Pontikos ( c. 345 – 399 ), who although he is writing in Egypt is out of the circle of the Cappadocians, and in the Sayings of the Desert Fathers.

Xenophon's Anabasis describes a group of Spartan soldiers in 400 – 399 BC singing to Poseidon a paean — a kind of hymn normally sung for Apollo.

According to his biographer in the Liber Pontificalis, Innocent was the son of a man called Innocens of Albano, but according to his contemporary Jerome, his father was Pope Anastasius I ( 399 – 401 ), whom he was called by the unanimous voice of the clergy and laity to succeed ( he had been born before his father's entry to the clergy ).

A Record of Buddhistic Kingdoms: being an account by the Chinese monk Fâ-hsien of his travels in India and Ceylon ( A. D. 399 – 414 ) in search of the Buddhist Books of Discipline.

The Chinese pilgrim monk, Faxian, stayed about a month in Shanshan after a 17 day journey from Dunhuang in 399 CE.

Although, returning home from the monastery in 399, when he would have been in his mid-teens, Xie retained a lifelong Buddhist practice.

The Buddhist pilgrim Faxian who stayed in Shanshan in 399 on the way to India, described the country thus:
