In July 1968, the 450th Bombardment Wing and 455th Strategic Missile Wing were inactivated, being replaced by the 5th Bombardment Wing from Travis AFB, California, when jurisdiction of Travis was assumed by the Military Airlift Command and the 91st Strategic Missile Wing from Glasgow AFB, Montana, when Glasgow was closed.

The township is home to the Air Force Reserve 911th Airlift Wing, which was established in 1943.

The 62d Airlift Wing is the primary United States Air Force active duty wing on McChord Field.

In Cambridge Bay, Nunavut | Cambridge Bay, Canada in May 2009, the Mars Institute's Moon-1 HMMWV Rover waits for a C-130 Hercules from the 109th Airlift Squadron to airlift it to Resolute Bay Airport.

Homer continued his military career as a member of the U. S. Air Force Reserve, initially as a C-141 instructor pilot with the 356th Airlift Squadron at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, then subsequently as an Academy Liaison Officer, recruiting potential candidates for both the Air Force Academy and the Air Force Reserve Officer Training Corps.

The first mission was flown from Udorn Royal Thai Air Base by three C-130 A Model aircraft from the 41st Tactical Airlift Squadron, Naha AB, Okinawa, Japan.

While under U. S. administration, on Thursdays a C-130 Hercules from the 345th Tactical Airlift Squadron, Yokota Air Base, Japan, would resupply the island on weekly missions.

Originally developed in the 1930s as a military base to allow cadets at the nearby United States Military Academy at West Point to learn aviation, it has over the years grown into the major passenger airport for the mid-Hudson region and continues to serve as a military airfield as well, currently housing the 105th Airlift Wing of the New York Air National Guard and Marine Aerial Refueler Transport Squadron 452 ( VMGR-452 ) of the United States Marine Corps Reserve.

The Military Airlift Command ( MAC ) assumed command of the base from SAC and activated the 443d Military Airlift Wing ( 443 MAW ), Training, to assume host wing responsibilities and to fly alongside the SAC aircraft that would become a tenant command at Altus.

On July 1, 2007, the Air Force Reserve Command's ( AFRC ) 433d Airlift Wing ( 433 AW ) at Lackland AFB / Kelly Field assumed responsibility for all flying training and academic training for the C-5 aircraft for all Regular Air Force, Air Force Reserve Command and Air National Guard ( ANG ) aircrews, leaving the 97 AMW and Altus to concentrate on C-17 and KC-135 training for AMC, AFRC and ANG aircrews.

In a major reorganization, Headquarters Command, U. S. Air Force, was disbanded 1 July 1976, restructured under the Military Airlift Command as the 76th Airlift Division and transferred its headquarters from Bolling AFB to Andrews.

On 1 October 1985, the 76th Airlift Division was inactivated as the result of activation of the Headquarters Air Force District of Washington at Bolling AFB.
