Occupied after the war by American forces, the airport was briefly used as a photo-reconnaissance airfield by P-51D Mustang ( F-6 ) aircraft of the 6th and 71st Reconnaissance Groups beginning in late September 1945, mapping the extent of wartime damage over Honshū.

The 71st Observation Group replaced the 69th in December 1941, moving in from Third Air Force at Birmingham Airport, Alabama.

On 22 July an advanced party of personnel from Headquarters, 1st Fighter-Interceptor Group and the 27th and 71st Fighter-Interceptor Squadrons departed for Griffiss AFB, New York.

Also in 2007, the 214th Reconnaissance Group ( 214 RG ), an Arizona Air National Guard unit, was activated.

In 1947, the 67th Tactical Reconnaissance Group ( later Wing ) was activated as part of a service-wide, wing-base test and assigned to March.

When the wing was activated, only the 67th Reconnaissance Group was fully operational.

In July 1990, the 163d Tactical Fighter Group changed missions and was re-designated the 163rd Tactical Reconnaissance Group, equipped with RF-4C Phantom II aircraft.
