Mar Saba was also the home of St. John of Damascus ( 676-749 ), a key religious figure in the Iconoclastic Controversy, who around 726 wrote letters to the Byzantine emperor Leo III the Isaurian refuting his edicts prohibiting the veneration of icons ( images of Christ or other Christian religious figures ).

In 726 Emperor Leo III published an edict forbidding the use of images in the Church.

But in 726, the Emperor Leo III made his first of many edicts outlawing images or icons ( see the iconoclastic controversy ).

Emperor Xuanzong agreed and carried out the plan, despite objections submitted by the official Wu Jing ( 吳兢 ), although in 726 he stopped the scheme.

The emperor Leo III issued a decree in 726 against images, and ordered the destruction of a statue of Christ over one of the doors of the Chalke, an act that was fiercely resisted by the citizens.

Leo secured the Empire's frontiers by inviting Slavic settlers into the depopulated districts and by restoring the army to efficiency ; when the Umayyad Caliphate renewed their invasions in 726 and 739, as part of the campaigns of Hisham ibn Abd al-Malik, the Arab forces were decisively beaten, particularly at Akroinon in 740.

Then in 726, Leo issued an iconoclast edit, condemning possession of any icon of the saints.

After an apparently successful attempt to enforce the baptism of all Jews and Montanists in the empire ( 722 ), Leo issued a series of edicts against the worship of images ( 726 – 729 ).
