The first tactical unit to come to England under Third Air Force was the 81st Fighter Bomber Wing based at RAF Bentwaters on 6 September 1951.

In June 1949, Kirtland AFB became host to one of the earliest alert Air Defense Command fighter interceptor wings created for air defense of the U. S., the 81st Fighter Wing, which had been established in May 1948 at Wheeler AFB, Hawaii.

The 81st Fighter Wing was redesignated the 81st Fighter-Interceptor Wing in January 1950, flew the F-86A Sabre Jet day fighter and was responsible for defense of the areas around LASL and Sandia Base.

As result of the group's inactivation, its operational squadrons — the 10th, 81st and 417th Fighter Squadrons were assigned directly to the wing.

USAFE then selected the 81st Tactical Fighter Squadron as the command's first " Wild Weasel " surface-to-air missile suppression unit.

Though it remained assigned to 50th TFW, 81st TFS was detached from the wing's operational control and attached to the 86th Tactical Fighter Wing.

The 509th and 511th TFsquadrons, were assigned to the 10th TFW, on 1 June and 1 September 1988, respectively, relocating from the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing at RAF Bentwaters.

It was used by the RAF during World War II, and by the United States Air Force during the Cold War, being the primary home for the 81st Fighter Wing under various designations from 1951 to 1993.

For many years the 81st Fighter Wing also operated RAF Woodbridge, with Bentwaters and Woodbridge airfields being known by the Americans as the " Twin Bases ".

On 8 July 1958 Bentwaters was operated as " twin base " with RAF Woodbridge and as a single unit under the newly-designated 81st Tactical Fighter Wing.

The last A-10 aircraft departed Bentwaters on 23 March 1993, and the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing was deactivated on 1 July 1993.

Constructed in 1943 as a Royal Air Force ( RAF ) military airbase during World War II to assist damaged aircraft to land on their return from raids over Germany it was later used by the United States Air Force during the Cold War, being the primary home for the 79th Fighter Squadron and squadrons of the 81st Fighter Wing under various designations until 1993.

Risner was commissioned into the Regular Air Force and assigned to the 50th Fighter-Bomber Wing at Clovis Air Force Base, New Mexico, in March 1953, where he became operations officer of the 81st Fighter Bomber Squadron.

He became an A-10 pilot and was assigned to the 92d Tactical Fighter Squadron, a unit of the 81st Tactical Fighter Wing based at RAF Bentwaters in the United Kingdom, in June 1990.

The 81st Medical Group is also located at the base and operates the second largest medical center in the Air Force.

The following Fort Gillem units are scheduled to relocate: Headquarters, First Army, to Rock Island Arsenal, Ill .; 2nd Recruiting Brigade to Redstone Arsenal, Ala .; the 52nd Explosive Ordnance Disposal Group to Fort Campbell, Ky .; the 81st Regional Readiness Command Equipment Concentration Site to Fort Benning, Ga .; and the U. S. Army Central Headquarters support office to Shaw Air Force Base, S. C.

The 81st Division ( Wild Cat ) was the first unit activated at Camp Rucker on June 15, 1942.
