The Air Force activated the 851st Strategic Missile Squadron ( Titan I ) on April 1, 1961.

Within 3 months, the 851st Strategic Missile Squadron was deactivated.

The 851st Strategic Missile Squadron operated three HGM-25A Titan I ICBM sites: ( 1 Feb 1961-25 Mar 1965 )

A Titan-I ICBM was located on the north side of the airport from 1962 – 1965, part of the Beale AFB's 851st Strategic Missile Squadron system of several ICBMs centered around Marysville.

In September 1962, the 851st SMS became the last Titan I Squadron to achieve alert status.

He was the 1, 152nd Knight of the Order of the Golden Fleece in Austria and the 851st Knight of the Order of the Garter in 1914.

Many of the successful programs were transitioned to the Services, such as the foundation technologies in automatic target recognition, space based sensing, propulsion, and materials that were transferred to the Strategic Defense Initiative Organization ( SDIO ), later known as the Ballistic Missile Defense Organization ( BMDO ), now titled the Missile Defense Agency ( MDA ).

By 1958, roughly four years after Schriever had initiated his ballistic missile program, SAC activated the 704th Strategic Missile Wing to operate first the intermediate range Thor missile and then a year later the first true ICBM, the Atlas missile.

The USAF nuclear component was then officially combined with the United States Navy's strategic nuclear component, its Fleet Ballistic Missile ( FBM ) submarines, to form United States Strategic Command ( USSTRATCOM ), which is headquartered at SAC's former complex at Offutt AFB, Nebraska.

Missile compartments are dismantled according to the provisions of the Strategic Arms Reductions Treaty.

The SALT I talks led to the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty and an Interim Strategic Arms Limitation Agreement ( see SALT I ), both in 1972.

In 1962, the Strategic Air Command's 390th Strategic Missile Wing ( 390 SMW ) and its 18 Titan II ICBM sites around Tucson were activated.

Following the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1963, the 4080th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing at Laughlin AFB, Texas, relocated to the base and assumed responsibility for all U-2 operations, emphasizing long-range strategic reconnaissance and intelligence collection.

SAC subsequently deactivated the 390th Strategic Missile Wing on 30 June 1984.

With the activation of the 704th Strategic Missile Wing ( Atlas ) at Cooke on July 1, the 392d was assigned to the wing.

Headquarters SAC transferred the 864th Strategic Missile Squadron ( IRBM-Jupiter ) from Huntsville, Alabama, to Cooke AFB.

In April, Headquarters SAC activated the 576th Strategic Missile Squadron ( ICBM-Atlas ) at Cooke AFB.

The next month, the first missile to be removed from an operational unit and sent to Vandenberg AFB for confidence firing arrived from a Thor IRBM squadron ( 98th RAF Strategic Missile Squadron ) in the United Kingdom.

The first intercontinental ballistic missile, the SM-65D Atlas ICBM, was delivered and was accepted by SAC's 576th Strategic Missile Squadron on 18 February 1959.

This launcher was the prototype of the ones to be used at the first operational Atlas squadron, the 564th Strategic Missile Squadron, Francis E. Warren AFB, Wyoming.

The Atlas-Ds were taken off alert at the 576th Strategic Missile Squadron ( Complex 576B ) in May 1964 as part of the phaseout of the Atlas from active ICBM service.

The last Atlas F test launch was on 18 January 1965, and the 576th Strategic Missile Squadron was inactivated on 2 April 1966.

As a result, the Titan I ICBM launch complex ( 395-A1 / A2 / A3 ) at Vandenberg was turned over to the Strategic Air Command 395th Strategic Missile Squadron to perform test launches of the missile.

After completing his training, Powers was assigned to the 468th Strategic Fighter Squadron at Turner Air Force Base, Georgia, as an F-84 Thunderjet pilot.

Silos 394A-1 through A-7 were the first constructed for use by the SAC 394th Strategic Missile Squadron.

At various times McConnell Air Force Base hosted the 381st Strategic Missile Wing that controlled various Titan missile silos around Wichita, the 388th Tactical Fighter Wing, 23d Tactical Fighter Wing, 91st Air Refueling Squadron, 384th Air Refueling Wing / Bombardment Wing, and the Kansas Air National Guard 184th Tactical Fighter Training Group.

At 2015 27 June 1960, a United States Air Force tanker of the 380th Air Refueling Squadron departed Plattsburgh AFB to refuel a Strategic Air Command bomber.

* 549th Strategic Missile Squadron, 1 July 1961-15 December 1964

The 549th Strategic Missile Squadron operated three SM-65D Atlas ICBM sites ( 1 October 1960-15 December 1964 ).

The missiles were manned by the 549th Strategic Missile Squadron which was activated on 1 October 1960.

To manage these units, on July 1, 1958, Strategic Air Command activated the 4228th Strategic Wing at Columbus, composed of the 492d Bomb Squadron ( 15 B-52Fs ) and 901st Air Refueling Squadron ( KC-135A tankers ), being reassigned from the 7th Bomb Wing at Carswell AFB, Texas.

The Russian Strategic Rocket Forces have 369 ICBMs able to deliver 1, 247 nuclear warheads, 58 silo-based R-36M2 ( SS-18 ), 70 silo-based UR-100N ( SS-19 ), 171 mobile RT-2PM " Topol " ( SS-25 ), 52 silo-based RT-2UTTH " Topol M " ( SS-27 ), 18 mobile RT-2UTTH " Topol M " ( SS-27 ), 6 ( 15 in December 2011 ) mobile RS-24 " Yars " ( SS-29 ) ( Future replacement for R-36 & UR-100N missiles )

* Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty ( START I )— signed 1991, ratified 1994: Limited long-range nuclear forces in the United States and the newly independent states of the former Soviet Union to 6, 000 attributed warheads on 1, 600 ballistic missiles and bombers.

* Strategic Offensive Reductions Treaty ( SORT or Moscow Treaty )— signed 2002, into force 2003: A very loose treaty that is often criticized by arms control advocates for its ambiguity and lack of depth, Russia and the United States agreed to reduce their " strategic nuclear warheads " ( a term that remain undefined in the treaty ) to between 1, 700 and 2, 200 by 2012.

The navy, according to 2004 estimates from the International Institute for Strategic Studies, now has 1, 800 personnel, and a base at Marsa Gwayawi on the Red Sea.

On 1 June 2006 the US Department of Health and Human Services awarded a $ 363 million contract with Cangene Corporation for 200, 000 doses of Heptavalent Botulinum Antitoxin over five years for delivery into the Strategic National Stockpile beginning in 2007.

The LGM-30A Minuteman-I was first test-fired on 1 February 1961, and entered into the Strategic Air Command ’ s arsenal in 1962, at Malmstrom Air Force Base, Montana ; the “ improved ” LGM-30B became operational at Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, Minot Air Force Base, North Dakota, F. E.

While over 5, 000 U. S. airmen had been killed and over 1, 000 more were either missing in action ( MIA ), or captured ( prisoners of war / POW ); the USAF 100th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing had flown approximately 3, 435 UAV missions during the war, at a cost of about 554 UAVs lost to all causes.

On 1 May 1949, March became a part of the Strategic Air Command and the Fifteenth Air Force.

On 1 June 1992, a major Air Force reorganization resulted in the disestablishment of the Strategic Air Command.

The Air Force transferred management responsibilities for Cooke AFB from ARDC to the Strategic Air Command ( SAC ) on January 1, 1958.

The 4126th SW was redesignated as the 456th Strategic Aerospace Wing ( 456th SAW ) on 1 February 1963 in a name-only redesigation and was assigned to SAC's Fifteenth Air Force, 14th Strategic Aerospace Division.

The provisional 4200th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing ( 4200 SRW ) activated on 1 Janunary 1965 in preparation for the realignment, and the new wing received its first aircraft, a T-38 Talon, on 8 July 1965.

On July 1, 1976, the U-2 joined the SR-71 in the 9th Strategic Reconnaissance Wing giving the unit two of the most unique aircraft in the world.

Following the disestablishment of Strategic Air Command ( SAC ), 2 AF inactivated on 1 July 1993 and reactivated at Keesler Air Force Base, Mississippi as part of the Air Education and Training Command ( AETC ) the same day.
