AIX / 370 was IBM's third attempt to offer Unix-like functionality for their mainframe line, specifically the System / 370 ( the prior versions were a TSS / 370 based Unix system developed jointly with AT & T c. 1980, and VM / IX a VM / 370 based system developed jointly with Interactive Systems Corporation c. 1984 ).

AIX is based on UNIX System V with 4. 3BSD-compatible extensions.

AIX Version 1, introduced in 1986 for the IBM 6150 RT workstation, was based on UNIX System V Releases 1 and 2.

In developing AIX, IBM and Interactive Systems Corporation ( whom IBM contracted ) also incorporated source code from 4. 2 and 4. 3 BSD UNIX.

In the late 1990s, under Project Monterey, IBM and the Santa Cruz Operation planned to integrate AIX and UnixWare into a single 32-bit / 64-bit multiplatform UNIX with particular emphasis on running on Intel IA-64 ( Itanium ) architecture CPUs.

In 2003, the SCO Group alleged that ( among other infractions ) IBM had misappropriated licensed source code from UNIX System V Release 4 for incorporation into AIX ; SCO subsequently withdrew IBM's license to develop and distribute AIX.

The original AIX ( sometimes called AIX / RT ) was developed for the IBM 6150 RT workstation by IBM in conjunction with Interactive Systems Corporation, who had previously ported UNIX System III to the IBM PC for IBM as PC / IX.

AIX / ESA, while technically advanced, had little commercial success, partially because UNIX functionality was added as an option to the existing mainframe operating system, MVS, which became MVS / ESA OpenEdition in 1999.

Modular operating systems such as OS-9 and most modern monolithic operating systems such as OpenVMS, Linux, BSD, and UNIX variants such as SunOS, and AIX, in addition to MULTICS, can dynamically load ( and unload ) executable modules at runtime.

At the height of its success, FrameMaker ran on more than thirteen UNIX platforms, including NeXT Computer's NeXTSTEP and IBM's AIX operating systems.

The NeXT and AIX version of FrameMaker used Display PostScript technology, whereas all other UNIX versions used the X Window System-Motif windowing environment.

The DB2 LUW product runs on multiple Linux and UNIX distributions, such as Red Hat Linux, SUSE Linux, AIX, HP / UX, and Solaris, and most Windows systems.

AIX, IBM's version of the UNIX operating system, was not a target of SAA, but does have interoperability with the SAA family.

Caché runs on Windows, Linux, Solaris, HP-UX, Tru64 UNIX, AIX, Mac OS X and OpenVMS platforms ( old, still supported versions of Caché, also run on Data General AViiON and SCO UnixWare ).

MQ is available on a large number of platforms ( both IBM and non-IBM ), including z / OS ( mainframe ), OS / 400 ( IBM System i or AS / 400 ), Transaction Processing Facility, UNIX ( AIX, HP-UX, Solaris ), HP NonStop, OpenVMS, Linux, OS 2200, and Microsoft Windows.

In 1995, it was added to AIX, IBM's proprietary UNIX platform.

Postfix runs on AIX, BSD, HP-UX, IRIX, GNU / Linux, Mac OS X, Solaris, Tru64 UNIX and, generally speaking, on every Unix-like operating system that ships with a C compiler and which delivers a standard POSIX development environment.

AIX for the RT was IBM's second foray into UNIX.

) The lack of software packages and IBM's sometimes lackluster support of AIX, plus the sometimes unusual changes from traditional UNIX operating system defacto standards caused most software suppliers to be slow to embrace the RT and AIX.

The spread of TCP / IP was fueled further in June 1989, when AT & T agreed to put into the public domain the TCP / IP code developed for UNIX.

In addition, due to the open sourcing of Ancient UNIX Systems, as well as modern successors such as OpenSolaris and Plan 9 from Bell Labs, several versions of AT & T troff are available under various open source licenses.

Up to version 3. 7 of vi, created in October, 1981, UC Berkeley was the development home for vi, but with Bill Joy's departure in early 1982, to join Sun Microsystems, and AT & T's UNIX System V ( January, 1983 ) adopting vi, changes to the vi codebase happened more slowly and in a more dispersed and mutually incompatible ways.

A Chinese version of Tru64 UNIX named COSIX was jointly developed by Compaq and China National Computer Software & Technology Service Corporation ( CS & S ).

As Tanenbaum said in Operating Systems ( 1987 ): " When AT & T released Version 7, it began to realize that UNIX was a valuable commercial product, so it issued Version 7 with a license that prohibited the source code from being studied in courses, in order to avoid endangering its status as a trade secret.

However, due to the 68010's small speed boost over the 68000 and its support for virtual memory it can be found in a number of smaller Unix systems, both with the 68451 MMU ( in the Torch Triple X ), and with a custom MMU ( such as the Sun-2 Workstation, AT & T UNIX PC, the NCR Tower XP and early HP9000s like the Model 300 and 310 ) and various research machines.

NFS and ONC figured prominently in the network-computing war between Sun Microsystems and Apollo Computer, and later the UNIX wars ( ca 1987-1996 ) between AT & T and Sun on one side, and Digital Equipment, HP, and IBM on the other.

Later, Sun and AT & T announced that the two firms would jointly develop AT & T's next version of UNIX: System V Release 4.

This caused many of AT & T's other licensees of UNIX System V to become concerned that this would put Sun in an advantaged position, and it ultimately led to Digital Equipment, HP, IBM, and others forming the Open Software Foundation ( OSF ) in 1988.

At the time, Xenix was based on AT & T's UNIX System III.

Microsoft continued to use Xenix internally, submitting a patch to support functionality in UNIX to AT & T in 1987, which trickled down to the code base of both Xenix and SCO UNIX.

The production compiler for iWarp was a C and Fortran compiler based on the AT & T pcc compiler for UNIX, ported under contract for Intel and then extensively modified and extended by Intel.
